  • Prime Minister of Piedmont, a northern region of Italy
  • Established his own newspaper
  • Designed the constitutional structure of the Italian state
  • Became the first Prime Minister of the newly united Italian State
  • Believed in separation of church and state so strongly, he was was one of the only leaders at the time willing to negotiate with the Pope
  • Eventually gained Rome and established the city as Italy's capital
