From the School Counselor
“Who has ever bothered someone?” Not a single hand is raised. “How about bothered a brother or sister?” Most hands are raised. What is the difference between bothering and bullying? Bothering is when someone does something you don’t like. Bullying takes it to a level where it is done with intention to hurt another person, but neither make us feel very good. Students are learning strategies for dealing with the small bothers. If they practice these strategies at home where it is safe, it may make it easier to use the strategies with others. Students are being empowered to say the word “Stop” along with stating what the annoying behavior is. That person is being taught to stop what they are doing and consider apologizing. If the behavior continues, they should “Walk” or move away to ignore the behavior. If the behaviors still continues, students should “Talk” to a trusted adult to get some help. If your child comes to you with something that has been bothering them, ask your child if they said “stop” and “walked” away from the situation. If they still need help, be sure to listen to them and help them come up with a solution. Empowering your child to learn to problem solve is a valuable life skill.
