Hearts Aflame For the Love of Christ
Moving Along with Mrs. Maddox
Dear Friends in Christ,
These past two weeks my calendar has exploded with new family tours, classroom observations, and AP interviews. While it never feels good to be pulled in a hundred different directions, I have to say I really appreciate the fast paced finish to the month of February. To me, I feel like I am rounding the bases and getting ready to slide into home plate. A busy calendar means progress!!!
The task I have enjoyed the most was spending 20 minutes in EVERY classroom, recording data that focused on seven areas: Equitable Learning, High Expectations, Supportive Learning, Active Learning, Progress Monitoring, Well Managed Learning, and Digital Learning. In the fall, teachers are observed and given feedback about their style, approach, pace, and content. In the spring I use the ELEOT (Effective Learning Environment Observation Tool) which focuses on what a student needs to experience in order for good learning to take place. The items analyzed are from the student's perspective. This is the same tool used during the school accreditation process.
While in classrooms I saw beautiful reverent Lenten preparation at every grade level. I witnessed noisy students multiplying and dividing fractions, middle school students learning about the Great Highway of the Persian War, and talented 8th graders polishing their theatrical skills in preparation for their spring presentation of Mary Poppins. I was proud to hear our 6th graders answering silly questions in Spanish, and my heart melted as I listened to our kindergarteners read with cheerful confidence to their teacher ... something I refer to as the sound of growth!
Good learning, loving, and growing are going on in our school ..... the numbers don't lie. Not only does the data collected during observations show good learning is evident, our mid-year MAP scores report that over 90% of our students showed some type of growth in the areas of Math and Reading from fall to winter. Wow, this is Awesome!!!! Equally as exciting to me is the number of families who have returned their 2020-2021 commitment forms .....as of this morning 87% of our families are registered for next year. Nice job St. Joe!!! With Hearts Aflame for the Love of Christ .... we are wrapping up this Quarter, and headed towards a successful finish to a fantastic year.
With a Grateful Heart,
Jodie Maddox, Principal

Nurse's Notes
There has been a decrease in the number of students diagnosed with influenza this past week. We have had influenza in Kindergarten, 4th and 8th grades. As a reminder, symptoms of influenza can include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, fatigue and occasionally vomiting and diarrhea (more common in children than adults).
Please continue to report diagnosed cases of influenza and Strep to the school nurse. Remind your children to cover their coughs, use good handwashing techniques, and keep hands away from eyes, nose and mouth to help prevent the spread of illness.

Jaguar Jog- Fun Run!!!
Parents!
We’re so excited to host a Fun Run (powered by Boosterthon) to help our school! Boosterthon is a fun, nine-day program that combines world-class character content with a highly-profitable fundraiser. Thank you for your support!
To increase the excitement and school spirit of this event, we’re hoping to provide each student with a FREE custom St. Joseph Jaguar Jog t-shirt to wear the day of the Fun Run event, at no cost to our students or school.
Last year we were able to partner with community businesses to provide custom shirts to all our students. We’re hoping to partner with EVEN MORE local businesses this year, and we need your help! If you know of or are a part of a business that would like to sponsor our t-shirts, please see the attached Sponsorship Form for more information.
We need a commitment and logos from all sponsors by March 10, 2020 in order to supply all our students with a shirt.
Thank you in advance for supporting our school through the Fun Run! If you have any questions, please contact Michelle Reddin at mreddin@stjoeshawnee.org
