Building our 21st Century Skills
Technological opportunities to help you grow!
October 28, 2015
Why are Julie, Dan, Susan, and all our 5th grade teachers so excited?
MSDMV K-5 teachers met last Wednesday to work on aligning their Math curriculum. Understanding the importance of an aligned curriculum, these teachers are digging deeper into their standards and deciding which are critical to teach, which are supporting or important, and which would be considered additional standards.
These teachers are excited because they are using Google Classrooms to share resources, units, lessons, and ideas with their grade level partners across the district! Google Classroom gives us a place to do that sharing in an organized way.
Hats off to the 5th grade teachers for jumping into the classroom and making the sharing happen!
SKYPE in the Classroom
Shanna Shelton conducted two successful SKYPE sessions last week. Her first session involved her exchange student, Giuliano Bidon Greco, and his home school in Brazil with teacher Amanda Souza. Her second session was with Morocco, North Africa, and teacher Yasser Mohamed. Students from North Africa asked many questions about our students' life in America. Among questions about social media and school curriculum, Souza's students asked about teachers and if our students liked their teachers. One of Shanna's students took the mic and addressed this question. This MV high school student answered so well when he said, "Those (teachers) who respect us (students), get the most respect from us."
What a very astute observation! One of the best ways to achieve successful classroom management is RESPECT, and I'll bet that goes for classrooms in all parts of the world!

The Connected Educator
Using Twitter to Build Your Personal Learning Network (PLN)
by Mrs Kathleen Morris modified on September 23, 2014
Most teachers who are using Twitter would probably agree that it is their number one way to build and connect with their PLN. Twitter is a valuable tool you can use to connect with like-minded educators for personalized and ongoing professional development. The professional development model where the educator sits in a classroom two or three days a year and an “expert” delivers content is no longer the norm. (Chris Betcher) Twitter breaks down the barriers of distance and enables you to build a diverse and innovative network of educators that provides professional development opportunities 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Here are a few steps to get started using Twitter:
1. Create a Twitter account
2. Follow people (Upcoming posts will provide resources for finding people to follow.)
3. Read posts on your Twitter feed. Tweets are limited to 140 characters but can contain media (photo/videos) and links to other resources.
4. Post. Don’t be afraid to start replying to people, retweeting, asking questions, or striking up conversations.
5. Stick with it!
