Musical Notes
We have been busy in music class. Kindergarten got to walk to the Preschool next door and perform for them. They sang "Dr. King, Dr. King" and Stevie Wonder's "Happy Birthday To You!" The preschoolers loved it.
Second grade studies Civil Rights Heroes as part of their Wit and Wisdom curriculum in February, so they joined in the Black History Month program and sang This Little Light Of Mine, Woke Up This Morning, and a beautiful song about Dr. King's Dream set to the tune of an old folk song, The Water is Wide. Thank you second grade!
Fourth and Fifth grade Choir members sang additional songs and shared some facts and reflections with the whole school during the program as well. They practiced before and after school and during their recess to put on a fabulous program! Go Choir!! Several of the other classes requested to hear again the final song the choir sang.
Thank you to all family, friends, and faculty who attended our evening performance on Thursday, February 27. What a joy!

STEAM LAB
For the month of March in STEAM Lab we will be trying to put together a whole class domino maze using random trinkets. Also, known at a Rube Goldberg Machine. To paint a better picture think back to your childhood and think of the game Mouse Trap. They have to plan and design and work through issues and use their "thinker" to help solve problems. They are learning about cause and effect, force and motion, and to be creative! STEAM Lab at its finest!
In February we had the chance to get up close with a REAL LIFE stoplight! It was so exciting to see each students face every time I did the big reveal! The stoplight in the STEAM Lab is close to 5 feet tall. Most students thought it was fake but once I explained perception and how a plane is actually reallybig even though in the sky it looks tiny, its just because it's so far up. The students were able to get up and touch and feel and see the inside of the light. The bigger lesson behind the stoplight is that an African American man named Garrett Morgan is the "inventor" of seeing the need for a yellow light. So students learned about Morgan and were able to say they have been up close with a real life stop light.
I have created a "Lakewood Elementary STEAM Lab" Facebook page. I will update regularly with all the fun things going on in STEAM Lab via this page. Please go and like the page to be updated about what happening in STEAM!

Free Guitar Lessons
Two guitarists from Christ Church of Central AR located on Maumelle Blvd (across the street from American Pie Pizza), are offering free beginner guitar lessons for kids ages 11-18.
This is a 6 lessons, group format course that will take place every other Thursday evening from 5-6pm, beginning March 19. This is a course that they offer twice a year.
They are offering this service for the following reasons:
1. Lessons can be expensive. We want to give kids the opportunity to see if they're interested in music lessons without the obstacle of money. We have guitars available for kids who do not have one. Sometimes kids miss out on exploring music because they simply don't have the money for lessons. Our 6 lessons course should be enough to let a parent know whether or not they should make the investment, long-term.
2. We want to reach out to the community and serve. This is one way we can use our talents to do so.
If you have any questions feel free to email me or call/text Pastor Steven Vuong at 501-690-2636.
