From the Principal's Desk
Hello Waterford Community -
I heard from the Kindergarten students that the Groundhog did not see his shadow this morning - which means an early spring is all but guaranteed! I know a lot of students who would be disappointed without some more snow - so we'll all just have to wait and see!
Student Attendance
I meet regularly with our Unified Mental Health Team to monitor student attendance. It is encouraging that the number of students that are defined as Chronically Absent, meaning they have missed more than 10% of the available school days, is currently right around 5%. This is more in line with our historical average and well below the 12.75% we ended last school year with. I appreciate everyone's support in ensuring that our students are attending school regularly.
As always, let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Christylez Bacon Assembly
Thank you to the Waterford PTO for sponsoring and assembly featuring Christylez Bacon - the Human Beatbox. The students had a great time, heard his inspiring story about finding his superpower, and learned how to beatbox!
Souper Bowl!
Mrs. Germani is sponsoring our annual Souper Bowl donation drive. Students are encourage to bring in non-perishable canned goods or food and use it to 'vote' for their favorite team in the upcoming big football game! We will be collecting through Thursday, February 8 - and announce our school winner that day!
Valentine's Day Candy Reminder
In keeping with current practices designed to protect the health and safety of all children, elementary students in Loudoun County Public Schools are not permitted to distribute candy or other food items to classmates. As Valentine’s Day approaches, it is important for parents to understand that candy brought to school by students, including candy attached to Valentine’s Day cards, will be returned to the parent. Children are permitted to share Valentine's Day cards with each other, but they cannot give out candy.”
Speak Up Survey - Deadline February 9
Project Tomorrow is an education nonprofit organization and we have been facilitating the Speak Up surveys since 2003. Our mission is to provide a better way for K-12 education stakeholders, just like you, to have input into the future of education. Please know that we are not selling anything here. No instructional funds from your school or district are being used to support this research process. Speak Up is a free service we provide to K-12 schools and districts. Visit us at www.tomorrow.org to learn more about our work and the Speak Up Project!
Please know that all your responses are secure and kept confidential. No one will be able to identify your responses from any of the questions asked on Speak Up. Project Tomorrow uses the nationally aggregated data to create reports, infographics, and presentations on key education issues and trends in digital learning.
The Speak Up questions are mostly multiple-choice. You should be able to complete the survey in 15-20 minutes. You are not able to resume a survey. Once you exit the survey you will not be able to log back in to your original survey session.
We believe strongly that the opinions and ideas of parents and students matter! Thank you in advance for being candid with us in your responses. And thank you for your commitment to your children’s education and their future.
