Back to School 2020
The start of this school year is unlike anything we have ever seen. We all are experiencing varying levels of confusion, sadness, and excitement about the upcoming year. It would be completely normal if you and your family were unsure about the start of school. It would also be completely normal if you are over the moon thrilled that school was starting. It would also be normal if you were in between those 2 feelings or a mix of those feelings.
In this newsletter, we hope to give you some tools so that you and your student can have the best school year possible.
Tips for success in online learning
2. Budget MORE time than you think you need. Another common problem online students have is that they underestimate how much time an assignment takes to complete. Double the amount of time you think you need. If you get done early, AWESOME! But, if you need it, you have the extra time to get things done.
3. Don't multi-task or create distractions. It is tempting to have your child working next to you while you are folding laundry or other tasks but this could be very distracting to your child. Create a distraction-free environment.
4. Create a learning space. Find where you are the most productive. If you are in your super-comfy bed, will you actually work?? Also, get all the supplies you need to be successful and stock your workplace. If you are missing supplies, that could distract you or cause you not to complete an assignment.
5. READ! Set up some time each day to read. Reading increases a child's ability to communicate and improve language skills. It also is a great way to cope with anxiety and stress.
6. Actively participate in ALL courses. Email your instructors and classmates. Complete your assignments. Check the course for announcements and emails. Attend all class meetings. This is how you will stay connected with friends and your own learning.
7. If you feel you may be struggling, speak up! Our goal is your success. We know online learning is new for most of us. Ask all the questions you need to!
CONSEJOS PARA EL ÉXITO EN EL APRENDIZAJE EN LÍNEA
How do I cope with my child's anxiety?
1. Model for your child how to cope. If you go to catastrophic thinking and extreme worrying, your kids will see that and think that is how they should cope with the situation.
2. Practice gratefulness. Training your brain to look for the positive (and teaching your kids to look for the positive) has many benefits. People who regularly practice gratitude by taking time to notice and reflect upon the things they're thankful for experience more positive emotions, feel more alive, sleep better, express more compassion and kindness, and even have stronger immune systems.
3. Practice mindfulness. Mindfulness practices can help us to increase our ability to regulate emotions, decrease stress, anxiety, and depression. It can also help us to focus our attention, as well as to observe our thoughts and feelings without judgment.
4. Have a schedule. Routine and predictability are important to us all. They help us "feel safe" because we know what is coming next.
5. Have FUN!! You have heard it before, laughter is the best medicine. Find fun things to do as a family, look for the opportunities to giggle!
