The Dawg Dish
What is New and Notable from Mount Vernon High School
Principals "Paws"
Hello Parents,
As we enter week three, it is my hope that your student has begun to settle into school and has found their niche here at Mount Vernon High School. The past few weeks have offered a number of opportunities for students to become involved in clubs, attend sporting events and even participate in our Welcome Back Dance. These are all opportunities that will help make your student's experience at Mount Vernon all the more memorable. Research shows that students who are involved in positive ways at school have higher attendance rates, greater academic achievement and are less likely to drop out of school.
Forming connections both inside and outside of the classroom is critical to your students success - this year and beyond. As a reminder, students can participate in club activities during the school day. Twice a month, students have the opportunity to attend a club meeting of their choosing during advisory. As a school, we have taken this step to reduce time constraints that might otherwise prevent students from participating. I encourage you to ask your child what areas of school life they have chosen to participate in this year. It makes all the difference.

Un mensaje del Dr. Wattawa
Hola padres,
Dr. Terri Wattawa

Did You Know?
We are fortunate to have two honeybee hives on campus. One is a standard Langstroth hive on the balcony of New Main and the other is an observation hive that is inside the building with an exit tube for the bees to come and go through. There is a great view of each hive and the bees are behind glass so that students can safely observe them.
Students are welcome to open the hives with Mr. Engman every Wednesday after school as long as the weather is reasonably nice. We have 5 full bee suits for students to wear, but they must wear shoes that cover their feet and socks that cover their ankles. They also must have a permission slip signed by their parents. Permission slips are available in a file near the beehives and should be returned to Mr Engman. We meet in New Main 304 or near the balcony of New Main by the bees. Parents are also welcome. The suits are given out to the first 5 people who come, but they can be reserve one with an email.
Our bees have never caused a problem on campus, but all students with any life-threatening allergy must contact our school nurse,
Beekeeper: Eric Engman - eengman@mvsd320.org
School Nurse: Christy Rittenhouse - crittenhouse@msvsd320.org
