Differences between cognitive and language characteristics
Memory Issues:
Cognitive:
- Can’t remember names quickly
- Struggle to remember sequences of numbers or letters
- Can easily forget or lose things
- Forget basic information
Language:
- Has trouble remembering the information during short or long time
Pragmatics Issues:
Language:
- Misinterpret social cues
- Inappropriate or off-topic comments
- Unorganized way to story tell
Cognitive:
- Trouble socially interacting with peers
- Have social problem, such as, can’t make or keep friends
- They can’t understand why they are rejected by their peers
- Target for bullying
Attention Issues:
Cognitive:
- Can be distracted fast and lose attention
- Has hard time focusing on academic tasks
- Their lack of focus can be due to hyperactivity and excessive movement
Language:
- Difficulty to learn the numbers, colors, shapes, alphabet, days
- Difficulty in classroom discussions
- Difficulty expressing needs and wants
- Problems on learning basic math
Learning Styles:
Cognitive:
- By when they are 4 month old they explore objects with fingers, hands, toes
- By age 1 pretends to play
- Between 3 – 4 years old learns with cause and effect in play
Language:
- Side by side sessions with the SLP in the classroom (Walker, 2014).
Academic Issues:
Cognitive:
- 90% of the students that have a learning disability are in Special Education due to reading problems
- Most of the students with LD have specific reading disability called Dyslexia
- Difficulty with numerical reasoning and calculation (Heward, 2010)
Language:
- Trouble understanding math problems and solve them
- Difficulty understanding how the letters are represented by the sounds of speech
- Don’t have enough vocabulary to understand what they are reading and link it to an experience (Rosenberg, 2010)
