"Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up."
What Will We Be Learning This Week?
Math
We will continue our study Cluster 4 next week: Develop Multiplication and Division Strategies. Students will be learning to multiply 1 by 2 digit, 1 by 3 digit, 1 by 4 digit and 2 by 2 digit numbers. Students will learn to multiply larger numbers using their knowledge of place value.
Please understand that the algorithms taught may look very different from those taught to you when you were in school. I strongly encourage students to use the place value strategies, even if the standard algorithm seems 'simpler'. By using knowledge of place value, students are better able to understand multiplication and division conceptually.
Science
We will be reading SSW #1 (Physical Science) next week. We will be learning about how scientists conduct experiments, record observations and use tools to answer questions and solve problems. The newspaper will be completed in class. It will be listed on the Assignment Slip as due on Friday, November 16th, but students will have time in class to complete the assignment. It does not need to be completed at home for homework unless your child did not complete it during class.
Language Arts
We will finish reading Soft Rain in the next couple of days. Once we finish we will read a book in our guided reading groups in which we will focus on inferencing.

Box Top Collection Competition!!!
The homeroom class that collects the most box tops at Blackburn Elementary will win an ICE CREAM PARTY! Ms. Ellis is a big fan of ice cream and competing! She would really like to win! She will give a HW Pass to any student who sends in 10 or more box tops. Please encourage grandparents, aunts, uncles, and friends at church to collect as many as possible and send them to Ms. Ellis' homeroom!
