Phoenix News

Collegiate Academy at TCC Northeast

NOVEMBER 15, 2020

Phoenix Family,

We had over a hundred students participate in person on Friday for TSI testing and prep! We will begin publishing our progress in the Phoenix News next week! We hope to reach our goal of over 300 tests completed by December 11!!

It was so good to see our virtual students and I can't wait until we can all be together Phoenix Strong!

Always grateful,

Bobbe Knutz

Asynchronous Learning Fridays at CA

The College Board is launching the TSIA 2.0, in January of 2021. At that time, if a student has not “completed” both the TSI Reading and Writing tests, they will be required to take the new test which combines the two subject areas, reading and writing. They are not “grandfathering” in any students who have completed reading and not writing or writing but not reading. This will cause our students to fall further behind and will limit access to college courses they would otherwise have been able to take if we were able to test them following our usual testing timeline/schedule.

During the spring and summer of 2020, Collegiate Academy was unable to test students for the TSI Reading, Writing, and Math test in person due to the pandemic. As a result, Collegiate Academy is a semester and summer behind in our TSI testing for the Classes of 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024. As part of our four-year plan, students are expected to take a minimum of three college classes per semester in addition to their high school courses to meet their high school and college graduation requirements. If students are not both TSI Reading and TSI Writing complete, it limits their ability to take 3 classes per semester and creates barriers to college class access.

We are determined to make a pathway for all students to be ready for their college courses and that’s why we will have asynchronous learning Fridays four times this fall semester. Only students identified to test will be on campus. We will notify parents and students on Tuesday if the student will be testing on Friday. Mrs. Haney, our TSI testing coordinator, is making a schedule and we will share it early next week, so you can make plans to be on campus on your testing day. We will provide normal bus transportation and Nutrition Services for testers. Even if you are a virtual student we are encouraging you to participate in this opportunity to complete your TSI testing. You will be in a large TCC NE computer lab with only 10 other students. Our goal is for every CA student to earn a high school diploma and an associate degree.

When you receive your invitation survey, please fill it out immediately, so we can prepare for you. All students will need to return their survey by Wednesday the week they are testing on Friday to secure their spot, reserve a bus ride and/or lunch if needed. Parents please email me with any questions. Students, your Pathways teachers will give you more information this week.

I am excited that we will be able to focus on student success in a very intentional way on the next 4 Fridays. However, don’t forget we still have school, but online on those days!

Here is the summary of Asynchronous Fridays at CA

1. All CA students will learn online on the next four Fridays (Nov.13, 20 and Dec. 4, 11)

2. Individual students will be scheduled to attend TSI Prep and Testing on a specific Friday.

3. Transportation and nutrition services will be available for testers at CA.

4. Car riders should be dropped off at normal time, but can be picked up when tests are completed.

5. Only students testing will be on campus on November 13, 20 and December 4, 11. Lessons will be accessed online through canvas for those days.

It’s recruitment season again here at Collegiate Academy, and we are working hard to recruit another great freshmen class. If you know of any 8th grade students who live in the GCISD district and who might be interested in joining our school, please encourage them to apply.

Drop Deadline Approaching

The TCC Drop deadline is November 19th. If you’re struggling in your college classes please don’t struggle alone! Talk to your Pathways teacher so we can make a plan for you so that we can avoid probation or suspension at TCC!

Don’t Change Your College Classes!

Please do not change your college schedule moving forward without first talking to Mr. Cavanagh. If you change your schedule without talking to Mr. Cavanagh you will be dropped from the classes that you add so that your skyward schedule will match your TCC schedule.

As we move into November, GCISD will be making a slight adjustment to the process in which families are notified of a test-confirmed positive COVID-19 case on their campus. Beginning this week, families will receive one email notification identifying all positive cases for that day on their student’s campus, as opposed to multiple emails if there are multiple cases. Families will only receive this email if there was a positive case on your student’s campus that day.

NOTE: This does not change procedures for close contact communication. If your child is determined to be a close contact of a test-confirmed positive case, you will be directly notified by your campus.

Students - Your Voice Matters!

Our goal at Collegiate Academy is for your success. Please complete this Collegiate Academy Learning Feedback form, and share with us your comfort level with Webex, Canvas, what we are doing to make learning easier, and how we can make your experience with learning better.

COVID-19 causes symptoms that are similar to many common illnesses, and people are infectious before they even have symptoms. So, in the case that someone in your household is displaying symptoms of illness, we ask that all of your children, as potential Close Contacts, stay home until a diagnosis is confirmed. Remember, a Close Contact is a person who is within six feet of you for 15 minutes or more, as would be common within your home.

If someone in your house is ill, then everyone has likely been exposed to the virus. Again, your campus nurse is ready to discuss with you about the specifics of your family situation and make the proper recommendations.

Please be aware that as we move through this unique school year with in-person and remote learners, the way in which our teachers take attendance in Skyward has become much more complex. Therefore, to make better use of instructional time, teachers now have the flexibility to formally enter attendance into Skyward up to a full day after the attendance period.

With that said, it is important for parents to know that if you access Skyward to view your student’s attendance, it is possible the system may show them as being absent for the current day, even if they were present in class or online. Additionally, it is possible that remote learning students may still display as absent up until the following day.

As always, we appreciate your patience and understanding.
