Fridays at 4:00

From the Desk of Ms. Rivera
To our new Bulldog families, welcome, and to our returning families, welcome back! This is the first Friday at 4:00 of the year, and we have so much to share with you. For those of you new to Riviera, Friday at 4:00 is a weekly email full of information about our school community. You will read about school-wide events and items unique to Riviera under "From the Desk of Ms. Rivera," as well as some insights into individual classrooms each week. We are highly aware that sometimes children don't relay much to you about their experiences at school, so we have taken it upon ourselves to help them in that effort.
Several changes have taken place over the summer months, including various improvements to our facilities. We built out a new science lab in the West Building, and the music room and another classroom were upgraded with 65" interactive flat-panel monitors, whiteboard walls, and brand new furniture, all to support an extraordinary curriculum. To improve our safety, we have added an additional armed guard on campus.
This year we are also implementing a progress monitoring system to keep track of individual student growth. Students in grades one through five will take an adaptive assessment which takes 20-30 minutes in reading and in math. They will take the computer-based assessment in the fall, spring, and winter. This information will allow teachers to differentiate instruction and provide a more tailored approach to learning.
In grades one through three, we will be reinstituting the Accelerated Reader Program. Accelerated Reader is a computer-based program used to monitor reading practice and progress. It helps teachers guide students to books at students' individual reading levels. Students take short quizzes after reading a book to check comprehension.
From our annual Kick-Off Assembly and our Boohoo Yahoo Breakfast to 4th and 5th graders learning their new class schedules perfectly, this first week went by so smoothly that we felt like we have been in school for several months. We have to thank you because your cooperation was essential in making this week a success. However, the true mark of a great start is the happiness and excitement our students display every day. Those smiles are feedback to allow us to evaluate our efforts and continue our work to provide our students with an exceptional school experience.
We hope you have a wonderful weekend, and we will reach out to you again next Friday at 4:00!
Sincerely,
Ms. Rivera
