Social Media finding it's way into the school setting
Hello Parents/Guardians,
Milton Somers, along with many other buildings in the school system, are seeing an increase in misuses of social media that have caused additional issues in school. Superintendent Navarro sent an email out to Middle and High School families on Wednesday, December 8th regarding this concern, which is included in our newsletter.
Parents/Guardians are highly encouraged to read this communication with your child to make sure it is understood that according to the Code of Student Conduct, disciplinary consequences can be issued for misuse or abuse of technology, including but not limited to the following: recording videos of others in school or on the bus, sharing videos on social media platforms or via text or group chats, creating social media accounts just to share videos or images that embarrass others or highlight inappropriate behaviors or that contain sensitive topics. While these occurrences often occur outside of school or after school hours, school-based consequences will be rendered if these actions cause (or are directly linked to) a disruption in the school learning environment.
Please speak with your child about the appropriate use of technology and social media and monitor their accounts regularly so you are aware of the content your child may be creating, accessing or sharing with others. Any viewed or known threat to school safety should be reported to a school administrator or staff member, including social media content that may disrupt the school community. Any questionable social media posts may be reported to the school as a courtesy, to help us look out for possible school disruptions, but these occurrences should absolutely be reported to those companies. Charles County Public Schools has no authority to remove any social media posts.
Thank you in advance for your continued support with ensuring Milton Somers Middle School is a safe place for all students to thrive and grow.
Sincerely,
Principal Taylor
