On April 6th 2016, Gabriella Olya wrote a nutrition based article for People magazine. Professional dancer, Maksim Chmerkovskiy, has decided to live a more healthy life. Maksim stresses to People the importance of understanding your own body and it's limits. He believes he needs to take care of himself before he can set a good example and help his kids live a healthy successful life. Maksim tells People that he is cutting bread from his diet. He believes that most grains have massive amounts of sugars and is bad for your health. He reports that he is trying to be a clean eater and avoids foods that are bad for his body. While avoiding most alcohol, he does drink a glass of pinot noir each night. This is because he believes there are benefits since it is not fermented like other alcoholic beverages. Physical activity is not new to Maksim and he continues to stay active in order to maintain his muscle mass.

Article Critique

While I agree that is is important to be a healthy parent and set an example for your child, cutting bread entirely from your diet is not the way to live a healthier life. For starters, there is a difference between whole grain and white breads. Yes, cutting white bread from your diet may be a good idea but there are many benefits that can come from whole grain breads. It is important for Maksim to know that there are different kinds of breads. Choosing to eat bread with dried fruit versus chocolate chips in it is a big difference. In that case, some kinds of breads can be high in added sugar and saturated fats making them unhealthy. Reduced risk of heart disease and constipation are a couple of the benefits from eating whole grains. According to, "by law, bread products made with enriched flour must be high in iron, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, and folate" (Stein). Your heart health and energy production depend on micronutrients like these to function properly. In regard to drinking pinot noir, this red wine can provide some health benefits when drank in moderation. However, there are other alternatives to improving your heart health that do not require drinking alcohol each day. Physical activity is a factor in living a healthy life and Maksim reports that he tries to do some kind of activity each day. If Maksim continues being active and incorporates whole grain breads into his diet, he will be on the right path to becoming healthier without needing pinot noir.
