Havelock North Primary School 4th May 2021

Kia ora koutou,

Welcome back everyone. I trust you all had a good break with your families. It is certainly nice having the students and staff back, refreshed and ready for another busy term ahead.

A special welcome to new students Lia, Mila and Lukas Steyn, Ava Davis, Oscar Wilding, Isla MacPhee, Scarlett Dercksen, Harper Theedom, Hudson Dunn, Miecke Kruger and Zaara Singh who have started at HNPS this week.

A big thank you to Cultural Leaders Kenzie, Sophia, Greer, Tallulah and Allegra for laying the wreath at the recent ANZAC day service. Thank you also to Mrs. Cameron for doing a great job of coordinating this very special occasion.

A reminder that Assemblies in Term 2 & 3 take place at 2 pm. This is to allow us to run our assemblies outside should the conditions allow.

At the end of last term a number of students were bringing Poppets to school. We ask that Year 1 & 2 students please keep these at home. Year 3-6 students may bring them to school, but they are only allowed to be used during break times or teacher discretion.

All local Primary and Intermediate state schools have a Teacher Only Day on Friday 4th June. On this date Havelock North Intermediate, Lucknow, Haumoana, Te Mata and Havelock North Primary will be doing some collective curriculum development work.

The Q & A programme was really interesting last Sunday. It featured a very informative piece on maths teaching in NZ. The NZ Curriculum is currently under review and maths has been under the microscope for some time. As a school we have spent a great deal of funds on maths professional development for our teachers over the past couple of years, so it will be interesting to see what the advisory panel comes up with. I encourage you to check this out https://www.tvnz.co.nz/shows/q-and-a/episodes/s2021-e11

Chess for Years 5 & 6 students will be held on Tuesday at lunchtime in the library, while Year 3 & 4 chess will be on Thursday lunchtimes. Thank you to the Home and School team for supplying us with new chess sets.

Tackle Bullrush will take place from tomorrow, Wednesday lunchtime. Students will need a mouthguard and a change of clothes to participate. Four ball soccer will be offered on Friday lunchtimes. These activities are for all ages.

Have a great week everyone.

Ngā mihi

Nick Reed
