We Made It!
We are well into our second week of learning in a new way and, while we have had big, medium, and small challenges along the way, I think we should take a moment to recognize all that we have accomplished so far! The staff at LMES have collaborated across the district to develop and share learning opportunities through the Region 15 Online PreK-12 Learning Resources website and Google Classroom (for students in grades 3rd-5th). Just like our LMES families, it has been a big deal for us to learn new software and hardware on-the-fly while managing a household at the same time. Our first and most important goal has been to set up new communication methods with all of our LMES families, which we have done using Remind, Google Classroom, emails, and more. Next, we worked on developing learning opportunities that were safe, appropriate, and that helped our students to develop or retain the same concepts and skills that we work on every day in the classroom. Our usual curriculum like Bridges math and Reading Units of Study was supposed to be used in a traditional classroom and counted on a community of learners having back-and-forth conversations and learning side-by-side with a trained adult. As Mr. Smith has said, what we are doing right now does not truly replace learning in a classroom with a certified teacher (not to mention all of the support staff, SRBI, special education, reading coach, math coach, paraprofessionals, and others!). We are not completely switching to online learning but we are using a number of programs that work on achieving the same goals of our classroom curriculum and can be done remotely. We are all in this together, and you have been learning alongside us as we have figured out so many new things. Region 15 and LMES staff are still here for you and we know that we will all continue to get better at this as we move into next week and we will be even better the week after that. LMSC Challenge!
This year, I have been overwhelmed by the altruism shown by LMES students, particularly the 5th-grade students involved in the LMSC (Long Meadow Service Clubs). One of these students wrote an email to his teacher, saying that this time is "...an opportunity for us to make a difference and do something special to help those in need in our community and around our country. No good deed is too small. My Dad and I started by making 100 sandwiches for the local homeless shelter. I'm challenging every student, teacher, and Mr Wermuth to come up with one way to make a positive impact and help someone impacted by this pandemic and to share it with the rest of us. We have a lot of time on our hands, so let's do something great with it." Thanks for the inspiration, Peter, I will start thinking about what I can do and agree that we can all show our community how Long Meadow cares!
