Crazy Hat Day to Support the WWF
On Friday, January 31st, the Vernfield Student Council will be sponsoring “Crazy Hat Day” to support the World Wildlife Fund. We are asking that each student donate $1.00 to wear a crazy hat to support this cause.
From the World Wildlife Fund:
“Australia is burning. More than 24.7 million acres have already burned in one of the most devastating bushfire seasons the country has ever seen.
The impacts on people and nature are devastating. It's been estimated that more than 1 billion animals—including koalas, cockatoos, kangaroos, and wallabies—may have been killed from the fires.
Will you help right now? Your generous donation will help support the immediate response to the fires and long-term conservation efforts to secure Australia's natural resources for people and nature in a time of climate emergency.”
Lip Sync
Please read over the details and rules about participating and song selection that were sent home this past week.
**Signed permission slips are due by Friday, January 31st .**
Also due on Friday January 31st are:
- entries the Lip Sync program's cover contest (5th Graders only)
- 5th Grade Act participation permission slips
- parent volunteer forms (1 volunteer required per act)
All 4 flyers are attached for download below.

Prime Time Reading! Grades K-2 - A Night of Adventures Under the Sea
The purpose of this evening is to promote a love of reading by providing time to read with family and friends, combined with fun activities. This year’s theme will focus on adventures and tales under the sea. We will start our evening off with flashlight reading in the dark, so please bring a flashlight and favorite book. Students can wear pajamas, but there will be a gym activity, so be sure to wear appropriate clothing, shoes and bring a water bottle. Please plan to arrive between 5:45-6:00 p.m. to sign in and arrive at your grade level pods. Flashlight reading starts promptly at 6:00 p.m.
All students must be accompanied by a parent/legal guardian for the entire event.
Please register online by February 5 at http://bit.ly/ptreading20 (if you are unable to register online, or have any questions, please contact Diane Meyer – szish.diane@yahoo.com).
Box Tops Update!
Our Box Tops Contest seems to have quieted down over the break. Only small quantities of box tops were counted for December. That being said, Vernfield HSA did receive our distribution check from the Box Tops Organization from our December deadline...$868.30!! That check includes all of the new ways that Box Tops has to offer for counting those dimes!
Thank you to everyone who is participating in this easy and worthwhile fundraising effort!
For the clips that are coming into the school, our contest stands as follows:
Third Grade - 664; Fourth Grade - 588; Kindergarten - 380; Fifth Grade - 365; Second Grade - 307 and First Grade - 229.
Keep up the good work with whichever method you are using for "clipping" those dimes!
