?! Riddle of the Week ?!
Stressed Brains don't learn the same way.
- Your body's defense system- the release of adrenaline and cortisol- is built for an immediate response to a serious but passing danger, such as a saber-toothed tiger. Chronic stress, such as hostility at home, dangerously deregulates a system built only to deal with short term responses.
- Under chronic stress, adrenaline creates scars in your blood vessels that can cause a heart attack or stroke, and cortisol damages the cells of the hippo-campus, crippling your ability to learn and remember.
- Individually, the worst kind of stress is the feeling that you have no control over the problem- you are helpless.
- Emotional stress has huge impacts across society, on children's ability to learn in school and on employees' productivity at work.

Happy Counselor's Day- Monday February 3, 2020
Braveheart Award for this week goes to..... Ms. Berger our counselor!
Thank you Ms.Berger for everything that you do! Ms. Berger is our counselor at GIS. Being a counselor, she wears many hats. Her most treasured and important part of her job is taking care of and assisting students to have positive social, and emotional learning environment while at school. She greets students at the "front porch" every morning and can tell by looking if a student needs an extra word or encouragement or some talk time. She is in tune with student's feelings and takes the time for teachable moments to help them learn how to work through problems and feel confident as they make progress this year.
Ms. Berger is also our 504 coordinator and the district testing coordinator. She organizes planning meetings for students throughout the school year to ensure our students are receiving the supports that are needed. She also plans, schedules, organizes and distributes all of our benchmark , STAAR, and TELPAS assessments. This is a LOT of work to plan and implement and we appreciate her hard work and dedication to organizing and managing all of these things.
I appreciate Ms. Berger for being a superhero to many. Thank you for your positive impact you have on students and staff at GIS.
Bravely leading students to see their WONDER.
Thank you Ms. Berger - we appreciate you! (Counselor)
