WHPE August Update
Building Strong Connections: Educate. Engage. Advocate
Summer Greetings from WHPE!
Hello Wisconsin Physical Education and Health Professionals!
If your summer is anything like mine, when August rolls around, I metaphorically and literally have one foot in the kayak and one foot on land, valiantly trying to enjoy every last bit of summer, while also setting my scopes on the upcoming school year.
It was great to see so many of you at the WI DPI Best Practices in Health and Physical Education Academy in Stevens Point. Eileen Hare and her staff did a fabulous job putting together a conference that had many tremendous presenters and sessions to choose from. I heard many great comments from conference participants, and truly enjoyed my time there reconnecting with good friends and meeting new HPE colleagues.
The WHPE Board of Directors had our summer meeting and started to put the finishing touches on the upcoming WHPE Convention in October. We can't wait for you to meet our Keynote Speaker, Irene Cucina, and our Featured Presenters, Terri Drain, Brian Devore, and Melanie Lynch, as well as all of the other great presenters and presentations we have in store for you this fall. Now is the time to begin talking with your administrators about attending the WHPE convention. We look forward to seeing you there!
Our WHPE Strategic Planning committees have also been busy working this summer on a variety of initiatives that we look forward to rolling out to our WHPE members in the coming weeks and months. I appreciate all of the WHPE Board of Directors members and liaisons/chairs for their time and efforts to help our association grow and move forward.
If you are interested in being a part of our WHPE professional development/ membership, advocacy, or technology committees, and serving as a sounding board without the time commitment of being on the Board of Directors, please let me know. We welcome a variety of perspectives from across all HPE disciplines and levels, as well as across the state, so your input would be appreciated. We will also share more information about this at the WHPE Convention. Stay tuned!
Make the most of your time to "kayak" and to do all the other fun activities that are on your summer bucket list!
In Health and Wellness,
Patty Kestell

Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child Model - Part 1: What is the WSCC Model?
WSSC Model- A Collaborative Approach to Learning and Health
The Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child model, developed by ASCD and the CDC, emphasizes greater alignment, integration, and collaboration between health and education to improve each child's cognitive, physical, social, and emotional development.
The WSCC Model incorporates the components of a coordinated school health program around the tenets of a whole child approach to education. It provides a framework to address the symbiotic relationship between learning and health.
The focus of the WSCC model is an approach that is directed at the whole school, with the school in turn drawing its resources and influences from the whole community and serving to address the needs of the whole child. ASCD and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) encourage use of the model as a framework for improving students' learning and health in our nation's schools.

Essential Components of Physical Education District Survey
The purpose of the Essential Components of Physical Education district survey is to conduct an assessment of the district’s physical education and physical activity programming. At the core of this assessment is quality physical education taught by a certified teacher. The district can use this assessment to evaluate strengths and weaknesses and develop and implement a plan for improvement.
The survey has nine components totaling 33 questions and should take approximately one hour to complete. It is recommended a district coordinator of Physical Education and/or the Director of Curriculum Instruction complete the survey using the above preparation documents. You will be contacted within a month of the submission deadline date with a score.
The survey is NOT a district requirement and is intended for the purposes of improving physical education and physical activity programming. The Department of Public Instruction will provide technical assistance at the request of the district.
Thank You to all WI JRFH and HFH Coordinators!
On behalf of WHPE, we thank all the JRFH/HFH coordinators for your time, efforts, and dedication to this collaborative effort with AHA!
If you are not a current member of SHAPE America, remember that you are eligible to receive a free online membership if your school has raised over $2000 for Jump Rope or Hoops for Heart.
You have also earned a complimentary WHPE membership for reaching that same level. Please submit the WHPE form to Nicole Popowich, our WHPE Administrative Program Specialist.
