February 2014

What We're Learning Now

Math: We will celebrate 100 days of school on Thursday, February 6th. We will continue to make combinations of numbers to 12 (ex. 4 + 2 = 6). We will also begin learning about two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes.

Language Arts: Popcorn words this month include are, for, you, and do. We will continue learning to identify and write the beginning, ending, and middle sounds of words. We will also learn to recognize word "chunks," such as -ay, -an, and -op, when decoding new words. We will be reading both fiction and non-fiction books.

Science: We are learning to appreciate the importance of natural resources (rocks, soil, and water) and the many ways we use them. We will also be learning ways to help us protect natural resources for our future use.

Social Studies: We will learn interesting facts about two of our famous presidents, Washington and Lincoln. We will learn how they contributed to the development of our country.

Home Connection

Here are some activities to do with your child to reinforce our learning at school. You do not need to turn in anything.

  • Practice writing letters and numbers with your child. Watch how your child holds his/her pencil to make sure he is holding it correctly.
  • Play mental math games to help your child develop abstract thinking skills about quantities up to 20. For example, we have four people in our family. How many plates will we need at the table? How many plates would we need if Grandma and Grandpa joined us for dinner?
  • Look for examples of the ways we use rock, soil, and water in our community. Cut out magazine or newspaper pictures of water fountains, swimming pools, rock walls, gardens, etc. Have your child bring them to class to share during science.
  • Continue practicing the pledges to the American and Texas flags. Remind your child to place his right hand over his heart during the pledge.

Valentine's Day

Students will be able to exchange Valentine cards for Valentine's Day although we will not be having a party. Please help your child decorate a shoe box to use as their Valentines' holder. Students can bring in their shoe boxes at any time. They can bring Valentine cards starting Monday, February 10th so that we can begin filling the boxes. On Friday, February 14th, we will take time during the day to read the Valentine cards. I will be sending a list of student names in their red folders. This is a great opportunity for your child to practice writing his classmate's names.

Teacher's Note

Please be sure to look through your child's red folder each night. Remove any completed work and finish any incomplete work. Incomplete work can be returned to me to review.

We will be having parent/teacher conferences on February 25th and 26th. Be watching for an e-mail containing instructions on how to schedule your conference. I'm looking forward to meeting with each of you.

Please read your child's library books with her each week. Discuss the characters, setting, and events. Look for popcorn words or other simple words. Your child may want to practice a particular page to read to our class. Shared reading is an important step in learning to read!

Please help your child learn the discipline of punctuality. Students should be in our classroom, unpacked, and ready to participate in learning activities by 7:40 a.m. each morning.

We will be celebrating 100 days of school on Thursday, February 6th. The kindergarten students will march through the school wearing their "ponchos" and playing their instruments. Information was sent home in your child's red folder last week along with a paper "poncho." In case you missed it, here is the information again:

Help your child prepare for the 100 Days of School Parade by decorating the "poncho" with 100 items. We suggest that he puts 50 items (5 groups of 10) on the front of the poncho and 50 items on the back . The poncho may be decorated with buttons, stickers, pennies, foam cutouts, clothes pins, etc. Your child can also write "100 Days of School" or "I can count to 100!" on the poncho. Be creative!

Also, your child may bring instruments, such as toy drums, toy horns, or maracas, to play while they walk the halls of Coker.
