KPMS Math Team
Do you like a challenge? Do you like to compete? Are you a strategic thinker? Are you a problem solver? Can you think of creative ways to approach math problems? Then the Math League is for you!
The Math League will meet every Tuesday after school until 3:00 pm. During Math League meetings, students will complete practice problems to prepare for upcoming math competitions. It is a great way to work with fellow students to explore new ways to solve math problems. No late buses are available so students will need to arrange a ride home or plan to walk home. Grab a friend and come to the next Math League meeting in Room 123 with Mrs. Kriegsman. Hope to see you there!
Student IDs and Suicide Prevention
KPMS students received ID cards this week. We hope that students will be able to use their IDs in the lunchroom in the future but we are still working on getting the system up and running. On the back of the ID card is a suicide prevention message. Please read more about the message below.
Student IDs and Suicide Prevention
Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death of young people, ages 10-34, according to the Center for Disease Control’s data. Raising awareness about mental heath and suicide prevention is important.
King Philip High School and King Philip Middle School students will have suicide prevention hotline numbers on the back of their IDs this year. After the loss of a close relative to suicide, Matt Kelley, Class of 2023, and Madison Kelley, KPHS Class or 2020, spearheaded a campaign to include the suicide prevention hotline numbers on student identification cards so help would always be accessible. We encourage you to have a conversation with your child, letting them know you and other trusted adults are there to listen, and reinforcing that the hotlines are available so that they are never alone in a crisis.
Tips for Parents/Caregivers from Samaritans:
Encourage your child to identify trusted adults they can speak with if they’re ever in a crisis or just need to talk. Try not to take it personally if they won’t speak to you or don’t seem comfortable. Encourage them to turn to those other adults.
Think about your own views of suicide. Young people pick up on everything. If you have a negative view of mental illness or help seeking, they may too.
Model healthy coping skills and self care!
Speak in the car. There’s nowhere to go and you don’t have to look at each other face-to face, which can take some pressure off.
Watch videos or movies together to encourage conversation.
Use stories in the media and news as a starting point for discussion.
We can all play a role in preventing suicide. Five important steps are highlighted below by the #BeThe1 To campaign of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline outlines 5 steps to be the one to help someone.
