Mrs. Fobbe's Class

First Grade

Reading and Writing

Theme 13, Week 1
  • Vocabulary words: equal, talent, believe
  • Comprehension strategy: Determine importance, Retelling

In reading, we are listening for important details the author used to help us understand the story. We have been practicing retelling stories by making sure we hit the important parts and not retell word for word. We continue working on using fix-up strategies and ask questions before, during, and after reading a book to monitor our comprehension. Practice retelling at home while reading your books. In writing, we are working on publishing and reviewing prewriting. The students are taking a rough draft of one of their stories and are working on making a final copy to be published and shared with the class. :) I am loving all the wonderful stories. We have had the opportunity to listen to some published stories and I continue to be amazed. :)

This week we worked on r-controlled vowels (er, ir, ur, or, ar).

Finished topic 15, Telling time

  • Learning about the hour hand and the minute hand
  • Telling time to the hour and half hour
  • reading and writing the hands and numbers on an analog and digital clock
  • Determining how long an activity takes

This week we started our insect unit. We learned about insects and observed mealworms and caterpillars. We will be watching them throughout the next few weeks and learning/observng their life cycle. I am amazed by how many students LOVE to hold the mealworms.
