OSP Connected
October, 2016-Office for School Performance-Volume 2
Message from Dayle
It’s the end of September. It’s time to ask and assess. In talking to over 1000 kids for our needs assessment, it became clear that by the end of September many kids are “in” or “out”. It is the time of year that the class is in a routine, assignments have already been given and should have been completed, and relationships are either built or are not in place. Kids are on a path. How do we make sure it's a path for success? Ask! Talk to the kids you are most concerned with and ask them how class is going, or how it could be better. Do a survey or an exit ticket. Dig into your data so far. Who is invisible or hiding in plain sight? Build a relationship; find out what makes them great and their hopes for the future. It’s not too late to get them back on a path, but time is ticking! They are waiting for you.
HSD Focus 2016
Instructional Framework - Academic Discourse
- Language scaffolds are in place so all students know what to say and can speak in academic sentence structures.
- Language gaps are identified and lessons help students learn more complex language in context. They have time to practice this more complex language with familiar content before using it in less familiar contexts.
- Lessons are designed so students are speaking at least 50% of the time.
- Strategies are in place so everyone is expected to speak. Conversation is not just for the good talkers; everyone has a right and responsibility to contribute.
Building Connections - Are you HSD Connected?
Please let us know if you have seen success with the application of some of these new strategies! We would love to highlight you and/or film your students in action.
College and Career Ready
Do you want this poster for your classroom so you can make connections between the curriculum you are teaching and possible career options? Tell your principal! Hillsboro School District believes ALL students should be prepared for careers and college and by integrating 21st century skills and career education into our classrooms we can make this a reality. College and career readiness is a K-12 priority. Let students know in your classes about the vast variety of careers. We use the 6 National Career Learning Areas as a tool to connect subject matter to possible careers, thereby creating learning environments that equip students with the knowledge and skills they need to compete and succeed in a global economy.
Trauma Informed Cared
Trauma Informed Care (TIC) - Trauma Informed Care is an organizational structure and treatment framework that:
Realizes the widespread impact of trauma and understands potential paths for recovery;
Recognizes the signs and symptoms of trauma in students, families, staff, and others involved with the system;
Responds by fully integrating knowledge about trauma into policies, procedures, and practices; and
Seeks to actively resist re-traumatization."
Lincoln Street, Brookwood, Butternut, Witch Hazel, Eastwood and Reedville are piloting this framework. In addition to professional development, each have added calm corners in every classroom, a wellness center and self care services for staff. If you'd like to learn more about TIC visit: http://www.traumainformedcareproject.org/
