MLC Weekly News and Notes

November 28th-December 2nd

Hello, MLC community! I hope you all had a fantastic fall break! We are now on the three week countdown to winter break. Time sure flies...

We have several events, field trips and happenings in the next three weeks. Please see the updates below and make sure to make them on your calendars. The wether seems to be taking a wintery turn. Please send your student to school ready for outside recess. We try to go out in most conditions - unless it is pouring rain. Inside lunch recess will be announced day of if that call is made. Just a reminder - if weather turns icy and it is not travel safe, PPS will make that call/announcement through school messenger as well as news outlets. That is a district wide decision and not school based.

We will be having our first school wide gathering (assembly) of the year this week! Excitement is all around! We look forward to seeing everyone as much as possible in these next three weeks. Let's all stay well and keep that attendance positive!

Best,

Suezann

Morning Drop Off Reminders and Updates for K-8 Students

Reminder:

1st-8th students should not arrive to MLC before 8:15 a.m. At that time, students will need to wait outside until 8:25 unless they are eating breakfast. Breakfast students may enter the cafeteria at 8:15. Students may not enter the other areas of the school until 8:25 to start the school day at 8:30 a.m.

Unfortunatley, we do not have enough staff to monitor all areas of the building and outdoors before those times. Teachers and staff are preparing for the day.

We want to make sure all students are safe and in designated areas where there is adequate supervision.

Kindergarten students will now be dropped off and picked up in the Kindergarten classroom! Teacher Sarah will be reaching out with more details about this change. :)

Thank you for you help in keeping our students safe!

TAG Info

TAG Referral Process

If you are considering referring your child for TAG, start by reaching out to their teacher. They will be able to answer many of your questions about TAG services in the classroom.

1. Complete a TAG Referral form. The link opens the PPS page with the official form/guidance document with directions on how to complete the form.

2. Any additional tests required will start in January. When all testing is complete, building TAG teams will meet to make final decisions.

3. Families will be notified about the results of the referral in early spring. Communication will come directly from the TAG department in a letter and/or email.

Our new TAG coordinator at MLC is Gina Biehl.

Student Spotlight

Great things are happening at MLC! Here is this week's student spotlight:

For the second year in a row, MLC is partnering with Sources of Strength, a youth suicide prevention program designed to harness the power of peer social networks to create a school where everyone feels like they belong and are connected. Sources of Strength mobilizes a group of powerful Peer Leaders to be agents of change and connectors to help in our school community. One of our 8th grade students, Genevieve, is taking a leadership role and helping Clement and other Adult Advisors to implement the program through teaching an elective class and organizing larger peer leader meetings.

This upstream model strengthens multiple sources of support (protective factors) around young individuals so that when times get hard, they can leverage their strengths.

We recently hosted a Peer Leader training with about 30 students who were nominated from our 7th and 8th grade cohort (see pic!). They did awesome! Many of our support staff and teachers were also trained as Adult Advisors and will be supporting the students. There will be opportunities throughout the year for these Peer Leaders to meet and design campaigns to spread the message of hope, help, and strength to the MLC community. Stay tuned!

Shout out to the 7th and 8th grade peer leaders!

Big picture

Art is ALIVE at MLC!

Do you wonder what's going on in the Kx8 Art Room? Art teacher Ned and his students are posting their creations and flops on Instagram at bettys_atelier_mlc in honor of Betty Mather, one of MLC's original teacher/founders! Betty taught in room 106 for the first third of our school's history. Betty's space was the beating heart of the school where all children met and created.

PTSA News

Greetings from the PTSA! Here's what we've got cooking this week and there's even more information on our website at MLCPTSA.org.

Craft Faire is coming! The MLC Craft Faire is a beloved event where even the youngest crafter can sell their wares. This year's Faire will take over the MLC Auditorium on December 8, 2022 from 3:30-5PM. Student vendors sell free, adult vendors pay $20/table.

We are looking for a few parents to host crafting tables at the Craft Faire. Please email Sheila: sheilagirardhanson@gmail.com if you are interested in teaching a craft or just re-loading glue guns.

Students can request a scholarship to purchase supplies for their sellable craft. Some very kind Craft Elves donated gift cards to Michaels so that every student can participate in the Faire. To request a scholarship, fill out the signup link: https://forms.gle/3FHci1qbr4dWGEVC6

Please see the signup link for more information!

Save the date: our next PTSA meeting is Tuesday, December 6 at 6:30 PM. Dinner and childcare provided.
