Falcon Friday Update-Nov 5 2021
Olathe South High School
Principal's Corner
We have had much to celebrate this week at Olathe South! Most notably, our Boys Cross Country team brought home the first KSHSAA State Championship for Olathe South in the last five years with a commanding victory at the state meet in Wichita. This was the 21st state championship for Olathe South. The school had a great time celebrating with the team during the Parade of Champions which concluded with the new state trophy being placed in our Hall of Fame trophy case. We look forward to many more celebrations like this with our student body.
This week we are also highlighting our Green Team. This is a great connection to our Horticulture classrooms that ties in a community service project. Mr. Witters and Mr. Rees have done a great job revitalizing our outdoor garden areas this year.
This morning we also celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Olathe Public School Foundation at their annual breakfast. The OPSF is a tremendous support to our classrooms and families districtwide. If you would like to support the OPSF this fall, they are currently sponsoring at raffle (see details below) that will be dedicated to our student need funds.
Have a great weekend,
Dale

Green Team at Olathe South
This week Green Team passed the century mark: 100 pounds of hot peppers donated to families in need here in Olathe! This student-initiated club grows the hot chiles from seed in raised beds at the OS Farm, tending them through the summer, and then they harvest peppers weekly through the fall. Mr. Witters, the club sponsor, reports that most weeks, Green Team’s veggies are the only hot peppers donated to Mission Southside’s Friday Food Co-op. John Hail, OS math teacher, is on one of Mission Southside’s Friday teams and has been able to provide feedback on the chiles. “We have people see the bags, and their eyes light up! A woman came up and she was so grateful for the beautiful chiles, saying ‘These are hot peppers? For us?’ and I could see how happy she was.” The Green Team students who harvest each week also like to sample the peppers and take some home for their families to enjoy, but the big idea with these peppers is share them with families who might not be able to afford fresh, high quality produce. With frost in the forecast, harvest season will soon wrap up and Green Team will begin planning for next year’s growing season.
