Weekly Update ~ September 6, 2016

Welcome to Oak Grove!

Please join us in a warm welcome for our newest staff members:

Junior High Early Hours

The Junior High Learning Center is offering 4th-8th grade students an opportunity to finish homework, check-out books, complete assignments from online textbooks or read. This is NOT an option to the playground or for social gathering.

The Learning Center will be open Monday through Friday beginning at 7:30 am until the first bell rings at 8:15 am. First come, first served - up to 30 students (overflow is sent to the playground). Students must enter through the Junior High entrance, then sign-in with the Junior High Office and again in the Junior High Learning Center.

Students may not be in the hallways before or during Early Hours. The Oak Grove School RUP applies. No eating, drinking or use of cell phones are allowed in the Learning Center. Parents MAY NOT drop off students before 7:30 am! Visits to lockers or teachers is not permitted. Only students that have an appointment set up with a teacher ahead of time will be allowed in hallways.

Students who demonstrate disruptive behavior will be sent outside for the 1st offense. The 2nd offense will result in a one-week suspension from early hours. Upon the 3rd offense, the student will lose Early Library privileges for the trimester.

We will begin Tuesday, September 6. Occasionally early library hours will be canceled due to other events in the Junior High Learning Center. Check the school website.

There are no longer desktop computers in the library; therefore, students will need to bring their laptops or iPads with them if they use them for homework.

Label Your Belongings

We strongly encourage you to label your sons/daughters personal belongings. Each day several lunch boxes/water bottles/book bags are left on the bus, or inside school. It becomes very difficult to identify to whom they belong, so they can be returned.

It would also help if you can label outerwear, as well. Despite putting all of our "lost and found" items on display throughout the year, we end up donating hundreds of items to charity.

Please assist us by taking a few moments to put names on these items so we can make sure they are returned to you if they are misplaced or left on the bus. Thank you!

Connecting your iPad to your wireless network at home

All students must log in to the LightSpeed Content filter from home each day that they use their iPad. It may appear that the wireless is connected, but the student must still log into the filter in order to utilize the wireless from home.

After connecting to your home wireless router, tap on the LightSpeed login icon. Even if you are not going to use Safari, there are many apps that require an internet connection in order to function. These include but are not limited to BrainPop, Showbie, Dreambox, and Edmodo. If you do not log in to LightSpeed, you may be able to connect to Safari initially, but it will cease to function shortly.

Your child’s LightSpeed log in for students in grades K-8 follows this format:

This is your child’s graduation year from Oak Grove, their last name, and the first letter of their first name.

The password for those students in grades K-2 is the unique four digit number assigned to your child. For students in grades 3-8, the password is OakGrove followed by the unique four digit number assigned to your child. The password for 3-8 is case sensitive and contains no spaces, for example OakGrove0000

Connecting your laptop to your wireless network at home

Students in grades 6-8 who are using a laptop at home must also connect to the LightSpeed filter in order to utilize their wireless at home. The shortcut to the LightSpeed filter is found in the toolbar when opening a browser such as Chrome or Safari.

SEL News

We had so much fun this week in grades K-5! Our 4th and 5th graders focused their energy on making a music video for our K-3 friends! The 4th graders sang "Be a Learner" from our Second Step Curriculum. The 2nd & 3rd graders enjoyed the video while learning important vocabulary words for our lesson. The 5th graders performed "The Learner Song" from our Kindergarten and first grade Second Step Curriculum. All of the students sang and performed the actions to deepen their understanding of our vocabulary. Focus, Listen, Self-Talk, and Be Assertive were the big words or phrases in our songs. The younger students were thrilled to see their neighbors, friends and siblings as the "movie stars!" Ask your child what skills are needed to be a focused learner.

Have a wonderful week!

Fun Fluency

Fun Fluency is offering an exciting opportunity for K-6 students to learn Spanish after school

Fun Fluency teaches Spanish—the way your brain was meant to learn it!

Students learn Spanish naturally through immersion, movement, games, songs, rhythm, reading and acting out/listening to stories. Fun Fluency’s storytelling-based method focuses on long-term retention, not just memorization. Students will quickly see how fun and easy it is to understand, read, and write in Spanish while being immersed in language, play, and laughter.

Don’t miss out on your child’s window of opportunity to learn a language with ease at a young age. Classes are taught by native speakers and experienced/certified Spanish teachers. Class fee includes workbook and useful online resources to continue studies outside of class.
