For Teachers Working with Deaf or Hard of Hearing Students
Good Communication- Part 2
1. State the Topic. Tell students what you will be discussing and let them know when you are changing topics.
2. Use gestures. Natural gestures aid every student when following a conversation.
3. Notice background noise. Students wearing hearing aids and other hearing technology often hear ambient sounds (shuffling paper, pencils clicking on desks, and air conditioners, running water) at the same levels they hear speech. This is why it is important to minimize any auditory distractions when possible. Close your classroom door and create a quiet environment.
Confirm details. Double-check key details: homework information, due dates.
Don't bluff. Don't pretend to understand when you do not - it helps no one.
