MacArthur Elementary School

Notes from the Principal
Dear MacArthur Families,
I hope everyone has a very enjoyable four day weekend and fall break. It is always nice to have a little down time to get rejuvenated. I would like to encourage you to spend some time reading with your children over the break. What a perfect time to read aloud your favorite childhood book(s) with your kids. I still treasure the memory of my mom reading to my brothers and I.
Have a Great Weekend.

News from Our School Counselor
Parents,
Did you know that today, Thursday October 10th is World Mental Health Day? 1 in 5 children have a diagnosable mental health challenge. Often times, even in today’s society, there is still a stigma associated with mental health treatment. It is important to remember that a mental health illness is just that, an illness. It does not define a person or have to be a permanent struggle. If you think of it like this: if you or your child were diagnosed with diabetes, you would seek treatment. The same should go with depression, anxiety, or any other mental health condition.
For more information on mental health conditions, please visit http://www.mhalakecounty.org/.
Have a great-long weekend.

“Vegetable of the Month”
Acorn Squash is our “Vegetable of the Month” for the month of October. Acorn squash got its name based on how it looks…like an acorn. Acorn squash is a good source of Vitamin C, Magnesium, Potassium and Fiber. We will offer samples to all of the students during lunch time October 15th.
Baked Acorn Squash with Brown Sugar and Butter
1 Acorn Squash cut in ½
2 tablespoons of brown sugar
2 tablespoons of maple syrup
2 tablespoons butter, softened
Salt
Freshly ground black pepper
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Scoop the seeds out of the squash cavities and discard. In a small mixing bowl combine the brown sugar, butter, syrup and salt and pepper, to taste. Rub the squash cavities and cut sides of the squash with the butter mixture and place them on a baking sheet cut side up. Bake in a preheated oven for about 1 hour until the squash is tender when pierced with a fork. Serve one half per person.
