Reading Month Wrap-Up!
“My first love as a child was... you guessed it... books. I asked for them for my birthday and for Christmas. They were full of secrets that very few people knew. They gave me special powers, literally. That’s because my favorite books were magic books!” This is what magician Doug Scheer told NWEL students during March’s 2019 Reading Month assembly.
This year’s Reading Month theme was “Unlock the Magic of Reading!”, so Doug Scheer was a perfect magical guest. He wowed our 3rd-5th grade students with an interactive, upbeat, humorous magic show mixed with mind-blowing tricks and book reviews of his favorite children’s books.
NWEL celebrated with an all-school read-a-thon on Friday, March 8th, and many students won books at our Annual Lucky Reader Day. During March, students were also encouraged to participate in dress-up days that had a magical theme. They dressed like playing cards, fairy tale characters, and magicians. They could even go Tech Free on Tuesdays and read instead or design a book cover for their locker, and classrooms won classroom snacks that celebrated various National Holidays like, National Cereal Day!
Sponsors of this year’s reading month were the NWCS Learning Coalition, NWPTO, Kiwanis of Jackson and Local Law Enforcement. Sponsors help our Title I staff promote reading all month long, as well as give opportunities for students to enter drawings for special prizes at the end of the month. Kiwanis of Jackson, in partnership with local law enforcement agencies, provided two bicycles per grade level to each school with accompanying helmets. Additional prizes throughout the month included, but were not limited to: reading month t-shirts, picture and chapter books, school supplies, fun activities for home, reading accessories, and NW gear.
The main goal of Reading Month for our K-5 students is to give additional focus to reading for pleasure, reading to learn, and reading with others, so reading becomes a habit in the lives of our students. So, put down the technology, shut off the television, and snuggle up as a family to enjoy a good book together! Those moments are priceless.
GRASP
Northwest Elementary is proud to have made arrangements to acquire the GRASP program for you this summer. GRASP is a correspondence program for grades K to 8 which helps students maintain reading and math skills while they are on summer break. Registration forms regarding the program were sent home in the envelope with your child's report card.
Children receive a packet of materials with a booklet containing 9 lessons. It takes approximately one hour to complete each lesson. Students submit one lesson a week starting June 10th or work at their own pace, as long as they submit all lessons before August 5th. They mail the lessons to GRASP where they are scored and returned to the children with comments.
We also have an on-line version of GRASP for students in 4th to 8th Grade. These students
will receive feedback immediately.
Children successfully completing at least 7 lessons with 70% accuracy are awarded a certificate. Those successfully completing all 9 lessons with 70% accuracy receive a medal! Certificates and medals will be distributed by your school instead of mailed as in the past.
When registering, select the grade your child is just completing so they review material they learned. If your child is ahead or behind grade level, order the appropriate level. The fees for the summer of 2019 are $26 for one subject or $46 for both subjects for each child. You can enroll your child by completing the form below and paying the indicated enrollment fee.
THIS FORM AND FEE SHOULD BE RETURNED TO SCHOOL NO LATER THAN APRIL 15, 2019.
All materials or login information will be sent home with the child by the last week of school.
Mileage Club
Spring is here and so is Mileage Club! Physical activity is imporatant for all children. After Spring break I will be starting a walking/running program called the Feelin' Good Mileage Club.
The Feelin' Good Mileage Club provides opportunity for all children at NWEL to walk or run for fitness. The Mileage Club will be held during their recess time, Monday through Friday from Thursday, April 11 to Thursday, May 23. The walking course is entirely on school grounds.
Your child needs no special equipment or shoes to participate. Each child is free to walk/run as little or as much as they choose in their designated time. Prizes are awarded for finished mileage cards.
I know your child will enjoy the Feelin'Good Mileage Club. If you have any questions feel free to cal me at 817-4704, ext. 4889. Lets get walking!

Drop-Off and Pick-Up Procedures
Drop-Off
Pick-Up
If you will be picking your child up, please make sure to send a note to the teacher, or call the office. If calling the office, please do so before 3:00 p.m. This will allow us to get lists finalized and given to the teacher. If you call after this time, your request unfortunately will not be honored. We will not pull children off the bus for late calls. You will need to meet them at the bus stop. When picking up your child please park in a designated parking spot and not along the drop-off curb. Make sure to bring a photo ID. Parents are asked to wait in the cafeteria until students are dismissed. Students will be dismissed by grade starting at 3:32 p.m on full days, and 2:27 p.m. on Early Release days. When exiting the parking lot please do not turn around in the Lansing Avenue Baptist Church parking lot.
Parking Lot
Thank you for your continued patience with the volume of traffic during our drop-off and pick-up times! You are doing a fantastic job of parking in parking spaces, driving slowly in the parking lot and being timely in your efforts. Please remember when dropping off a student to only drop them off when you have reached the sidewalk.
Morning Tardiness
We encourage promptness since tardies affect everyone and disrupt classroom time. One of the most valuable life skills a student can learn from his/her parent/guardian is the responsibility of arriving at school every day on time. Morning is the time when important school news is announced, teachers define the plans for the day, and instructional goals are reviewed and set. The whole tone of a child’s school day is set in the first part of the day.
Main doors open at 8:15 a.m.
School starts at 8:25 a.m.
Students not in their classroom seat by 8:35 a.m. shall be considered tardy.
If the supervisory aides are not present when you drop off your student, they are tardy. Please make sure to come in the office and sign them in.
Students who arrive after 9:00 a.m. will be marked as a morning absence.
Doctor appointments/professional appointments are excused with a doctors note.
Students must be in school at least half of the day, to count as a full day.
Please help support your child in learning habits that will help them be successful at school and throughout life. If you need help or have concerns getting your child to school on time please contact the office. We are here to help.
Medicine Procedures
- Do not send any medication on the school bus. Medication could easily be taken by the wrong child when it is not monitored by an adult. It is the parent's responsibility to bring medication into the Northwest Elementary office and check it in with a secretary.
- Over-the-counter medications (cough drops, Tylenol, Tums) must have a doctors order.
- No staff member will be permitted to dispense non-prescribed, over-the-counter (OTC) medication to any student with out a medication form filled out by a prescribing physician.
