SLCS District Update

Superintendent's Update
Dear SLCS Families and Staff Members,
As many of you know, March is celebrated as National Reading Month. A month intended to motivate individuals of all ages to read everyday. The importance of reading and reading comprehension cannot be understated. These are essential life skills necessary for learning and professional development. Perhaps understated is the fact that reading can also be fun.
Each year, guest readers including parents, grandparents, older students, staff, and District Administrators visit our elementary schools to read to the students. I am very much looking forward to a number of visits that I have scheduled throughout the month. It is possible that I enjoy these opportunities even more than the students to whom I’ll be reading.
I encourage you to spend some time this month talking with your children about what they are reading. Expand those conversations to include what they have learned from their reading, what they have enjoyed through their reading, and what they might be excited about reading next. Also take this opportunity to model the behavior we want to promote for our student:. Embracing the value and enjoyment of reading. Whether you are reading for information or entertainment, pick a good book and enjoy.

Celebrate our Teachers
Michigan’s teachers, including special education and ancillary staff, should be celebrated and recognized. Toward that end, the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) is seeking student/family created teacher appreciation videos. Please help honor South Lyon Community Schools’ staff by creating and submitting a video. The videos will feature Michigan students and families sharing what they appreciate about their teachers.
