RED RIBBON WEEK
October is also considered Bully Prevention Month. The theme for this year is "Be a H.E.R.O.: Stop the Bullying" Discussions and work should resolve around respecting yourself and others and making good choices because of it, which include making safe choices about your body and those around you. H.E.R.O. stands for honor, encourage, respect and opportunity.
Activities Related to Red Ribbon Week
Essay and Poster Contest
The essay must be on the topic of "YOLO: BE Drug Free." The poster can be on that topic or on Be a HERO: Stop the Bullying. Those are the only requirements.
Final products are due to Mrs. Barron by Monday, October 31, 2016. More information will be sent out via email following Fall Break.
In previous years, Maryville students have done well in the poster division.
Estimation Jar
Each morning a jar of items will be displayed in the front hallway. These items will be related to Red Ribbon Week and drug/bullying awareness. Classes are to submit guesses as to how many items are in the jar by 1:30 PM. The class that guesses the closest to the actual number will win the items and be recognized on the afternoon announcements.
SCAVENGER HUNT
More information will be sent to teachers regarding the scavenger hunt, but here is a brief summary:
A list of tasks will be sent to all classrooms. Classes will need to complete a certain number of these tasks during Red Ribbon Week. Some tasks will be assigned to a specific day, while others will be left up to the classes. There will be more tasks suggested than classes will need to complete, so there is room for flexibility and discussion. At the end of the week, classes who complete the scavenger hunt (hopefully all) will receive a small prize related to Red Ribbon Week.
Some of these tasks include:
Students sign the Drug Free Pledge (required)
Classes create a chalk message outside related to Red Ribbon Week
Read a book related to drug awareness
Read a book related to bullying
Complete a bully blocker lesson (required)
Complete a Red Ribbon Week writing activity
All members of your class participate in the Dress Out Day
Submit ideas for next year's Red Ribbon Dress Out Days
Take a picture of your class participating in Red Ribbon Week activities for the yearbook/facebook page.
Perfect Attendance for the class
Any other recommendations and ideas are welcome!

Soon after will be a guidance lesson for the month of November. More information will be coming on that classroom guidance.

So far, every month of this school year has seen a decrease in referrals from the previous 5 years.
However, it has been noted that not all students can recite the expectations (2RSK) so please continue to teach and reteach our expectations, including 2RSK. Remind students what that looks like in specific parts of the building or during various activities. Though re-teaching can be time consuming, it saves time in long run when instruction does not have to be stopped due to poor behavior choices from students.
The majority of our referrals (four) have occurred on the bus so it will be very important to reteach bus expectations when we return from Fall Break.
