Good evening Sierra Madre Families, this is Mrs. Lewis, your principal. Well, May has arrived and we are down to our last 23 days of school. Thank you for your commitment to SME and keeping your kiddo’s motivated to learn this Spring.
Here are the announcements for this week:
Monday, May 2nd we will have our BRAVO morning assembly starting at 7:50am.
Tuesday, May 3rd is our last virtual school tour of the school year at 9:30am. Please invite any SM community that you think might be considering SME for next school year.
Thursday, May 5th is Open House. Students will be dismissed at 11:30am. Then our virtual Open House will begin at 5:30pm with a virtual welcome by me, followed by teacher virtual presentations. Please check the Wednesday folder for the links.

Popsicle Fridays
Chill Out Friday is back this week! Plan to park your car and pick up your student on Friday, so you can join us on the front lawn for $1 popsicles.

SEED is excited to share recordings from their SEED family Summit. This month check out Dr. Yen’s presentation, "Using a Social Story to Help Children Understand and Stand Up Against Racism”
SEED is recognizing Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month! Check out the SEED resource guide to learn about the many local AAPI cultural enclaves and communities rich with culture, food and shopping.
Mark your calendars, the SEED Spring Social is coming! Sunday, May 15th at Memorial Park south! Come learn and play culturally diverse games!
The African American Parent Council presents the Black History Living Museum Project!! See all the wonderful presentations in person at the Robinson Recreation Center on Wednesday, May 18th at 6 p.m. Please see the flyer for more details.

Thank you to everyone for bidding, for attending, and for supporting SME. With your help, we raised $52,000 for our school's vital staff and programming!
Proposed Slate for the 2022-2024 AFB Board
AFB needs your vote on the proposed slate of candidates! Join us for our last meeting on Friday, May 13, at 9 a.m. when we discuss the auction, share our fundraising totals for the 2022-2023 school year, and vote in a new board. The meeting will be via Google Meet - watch for the link in next Sunday's SMORE!

Parent Volunteers on Campus- PLEASE READ
Please click through the below volunteer orientation slide deck and follow all of the links to the paperwork needed to be eligible for volunteering.
Teachers will be sending out a communication with the days and times parent volunteers are needed in their classroom, if any, for those of you who meet the requirements and are approved. Not all parents will be able to volunteer, even if eligible.
All parent volunteers are subject to screening by the principal.
COVID Screening and Testing Information
Please STAY HOME if you have ANY symtoms.
Screening Questions Daily before coming to school
- Do I have a fever?
- Do I have a cough?
- Am I experiencing shortness of breath or difficulty breathing?
- Am I experiencing any other symptoms?
- Have I been in contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 in the last 10 days?
- In the last 10 days, have I been directed to quarantine, isolate or take a COVID-19 test?
How and Where PUSD Students and Employees Can Get Tested
PUSD offers COVID-19 PCR oral or nasal swab tests on campuses and at the District’s Primary Clinic, 8 a.m. - 3:30 pm. By appointment, please call (626) 396-3600, ext 88180
SME is no longer offering weekly testing. Please contact the nurse if you would like an additional home test kit.
SME drop-off and pick-up reminders
Kinder Parents
Please do not block traffic during pick up and drop off, while waiting to turn on Hermosa Ave. Pull over to the side, and do not arrive prior more than 10 minutes to dismissal in order to keep neighbor traffic open. Traffic should be coming from Michillinda and eastbound on Highland. Please do not create traffic on north/south streets between Sierra Madre Blvd and Highland Ave.

Staff Appreciation Week
This week PTA and all of our SME families are rolling out the red carpet to celebrate all of our amazing teachers and staff as part of national teacher appreciation week. Please check your email from your room parent to see how your class is celebrating. And don’t miss the “Before they were stars” bulletin board on SME’s front porch. Can you identify who is pictured? Check back later in the week to see if your guess was correct.Chill-Out Friday Returns this Friday, May 6th!
On Friday, May 6th at 2:30 pm we will have our first Popsicle Friday since 2020!
We recommend making it a park and pick-up day. Find a parking spot, collect your student and present $1 (cash) for a popsicle at the Tiki Hut on the front lawn.

American Heart Association Challenge
Dear Families –
We are halfway through Kids Heart Challenge, and I am so proud of our students for being active and kind! So far, our school has raised $4,650 in lifesaving donations to help special hearts! WOW!!! Great job! You know what else will save lives? Learning Hands-Only CPR and the warning signs of a stroke! You can learn them by completing FINN’S MISSION! Vaccination Clinics for PUSD
We strongly encourage parents/guardians to get their children vaccinated as soon as possible. The State of California has announced that the COVID-19 vaccine will be a required vaccination (with options for personal exemptions) once it receives full FDA approval. We know that vaccinations are a key component to preventing the spread of COVID-19.
