Clothing
Clothing was an important part of Renaissance life. A wealthy person would have a variety of clothes made from the finest materials like furs and silks. A peasant only had one or two sets of clothes. Men wore colorful tights with a shirt and tight fitting coat called a doublet. Women wore long dresses with high waists and puffy sleeves and shoulders.
Transport-ation
Transportation was difficult and limited during the Renaissance. Farmers only went to trade, buy and sell between markets. Townsmen usually traveled by walking. The wealthy people traveled with horses, pack mules, wagons and coaches. Sometimes people traveled by water.
Religion
The main religion of Renaissance Europe was Christianity. The main church was the Catholic Church. Some new types of religion were also formed called Protestantism and Humanism. Humanism was important because it placed value on human accomplishments and the study of nature.
Arts
Most of the art was a distinct style from Italy. Some of the greatest artist included Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael. Renaissance art tried to capture the experience of the individual and the beauty and mystery of the natural world.The effects occurred in literature, music, philosophy, science and art.
Food
Most people ate types of bread and stew. Peasants would eat soup or mush for every meal with some black bread. The soup was made from scraps of food, carrots or eggs. Mush was made from grains like oatmeal. The rich had a variety of different meals. They enjoyed large roasts of beef, stag or pig. Nobody drank water, instead they had wine or ale.
Language
Most of the language was Latin because the Bible and prayer books were written in Latin. Once they broke away from the Roman Catholic Church, the English language was born. There was the great vowel shift were the long vowel sounds began to be made higher and further forward in the mouth.
Housing
A poor farmer usually lived in a one room hut. It was made of earth stone or wood with thatched roofs. Wealthier people lived in large houses. These homes were made of wood or stucco with roofs of slate or tile. There were usually more than one floor and two or three rooms on each floor. Then there were castles that were built mainly for protection. They were made of brick or stone. Homes were dark and cold. There were no bathrooms or running water.
History
Renaissance is a French word for rebirth. It is a period of time in history from the 14th to the 16th century in Europe. The term was used to bridge the Middle Ages and modern times. The Renaissance was a time of coming out of the dark ages. It was a rebirth of education, science, art, literature, music and a better life. The big part was the cultural movement, Humanism.
Architecture
Most of the Renaissance architecture style was inspired by Ancient Rome and Greece. Arches and domes were popular. They built domes above the cathedrals. Many building were built as square or rectangle symmetrical shapes. They used Roman type columns and the ceilings were usually flat.
Traditions
Weddings became a Renaissance tradition. Bridal customs and marriages usually happened at the bride's home. Instead of Christmas, the Twefth Night or festival lasting from December to January 6. This is were we get the song, the Twelve Days of Christmas. Gifts were given in rememberance of the Magi's gift to the baby Jesus. Christmas carols originated during the 15th century by St. Francis of Assissi.
