Roberts Middle School
GRIT: Volume 17
Dear Roberts,
During a visit to the NASA Space Center in 1962, President John F. Kennedy noticed a janitor carrying a broom. He interrupted his tour, walked over to the man and said, "Hi, I'm Jack Kennedy. What are you doing?" "Well, Mr. President," the janitor responded, "I'm helping put a man on the moon."
Roberts, you are all contributing to the larger story of the educational journey of each and every student. Yes, our goal at Roberts is to get our students to the ultimate destination of graduation, but we have to ensure that we create a learning experience of just not equality, but equity. Equity ensures outcomes by giving everyone what they need to be successful.
My team and I are challenged in creating a master schedule for next year that will help create equity for all our students. It has been a daunting task, and we are still in the process of creating it. We want a master schedule that will give our students the ultimate flight experience. I love that we are always willing to live outside our comfort zone and are willing to push past mediocrity.
The janitor was a contributing member of NASA that helped put a man on the moon. Even though his responsibilities were different, the destination was the same. We are doing something special here at Roberts. We are changing the trajectory of each and every child. Your influence goes beyond 5th and 6th grade. Thank you for giving every student here at Roberts a flight experience that will help them reach their final destination.

It’s All About the Plans
Think about a time you did not create detailed lesson plans and thought, “I’ll wing it.” Worst day EVER, right? Detailed lesson plans increase the likelihood that lessons run smoothly, so students receive data-driven quality instruction without wasting time. Aviators - The countdown to STAAR is on and EVERY instructional minute counts! See below. The number of instructional days (without interruption) might surprise you. We must use real-time and assessment data to create lesson plans that meet the needs of ALL students.
Not only are detailed lesson plans critical, but collaborating with peers to create detailed lesson plans is also vital. We meet as a team during PLC each week, but do you set aside time to meet with your peers to create lesson plans each week? The most valuable resource that all educators have is each other. We would like to join you in this lesson planning process. Please email admin the day and time you meet each week to create lesson plans with your peers so we can collaborate with you.
Lesson plans are due in Eduphoria by 8:00 AM every Monday…not so we can ensure lesson plans are created, but so you are prepared for instruction each week. Please use the Lesson Plan Checklist below when creating lesson plans by Monday, 1/22. We understand that each day will not include everything on the checklist, so please leave portions of the template not included in a day’s lesson plan blank.
The time is NOW! We have a system to catch students when they fall (AIR Time, DT); however, the reality is…we don’t have enough time to catch them ALL. We vowed that all means ALL at the beginning of the school year, so what is the solution? Quality Tier 1 instruction…that’s the solution. The more prepared we are to catch as many students as possible during initial instruction, the less students fall to AIR Time and DT. Like we said at the beginning of the year…Lean on your colleagues. Lean on your Peer Facilitators. Lean on administration. We will be there to help, so we can ensure that all means ALL this school year.
