Principal Memo

Wow, what a week it has been! I had planned to start doing a Monday Morning Message at the start of each week for students, but I quickly had to use my Lifeskill of Flexibility and be crossing guard instead! Fortunately, the teachers were also very flexible and rolled with it. When Ms. Charolette returned on Tuesday, I was able to give our first Morning Message. We reviewed our 4 Be's and I talked about the Lifeskill of Respectful. This is just an additional piece of our Second Step Curriculum I felt was essential to incorporate this year.

All week long we have had parents on campus for our Goal Setting Conferences. If you could not get in this week, conferences would continue next Monday and Tuesday. Please make every effort to meet with your student's teacher during this time. If you are unable to come on campus, please ask about utilizing Zoom or Google Meet. We want to make every effort to make connections with all of our families. If you are unsure if you should due to language concerns, all of our staff have access to Language Line to utilize translators in a multitude of languages. We can find a way!

In addition to conferences, our amazing Home and School Club had its monthly meeting in the library last Monday. If you missed this month's meeting, you visit http://www.FammatreHSC.com, to see what they're up to and how you can get involved. Wednesday was International Walk and Roll to School Day and our community participated. Walking buses once again met up at three different sites in our neighborhood. If you missed this week's, we hope you try for the next one. Even if only walking a block or two, it creates a social opportunity and reduces traffic in our neighborhood. It's a win-win!

Finally, today I sent out a quick anonymous survey to 3-5 grade students asking them to share something they would like their teachers to know and vote for our first spirit day. We hope to work on having at least one spirit day a month on a Friday. I will be finishing up my first parent survey of the year this weekend to gather information about family preferences for afterschool activities, parent education events, and volunteer opportunities. I look forward to hearing from all of you.

Take care and have a wonderful weekend,

Samantha Haley

Good Apple Award

Congratulations Cindy Janssen

We were extremely honored to bestow our District Good Apple Award at last night's Cambrian School District Board Meeting to our former, now retired, and long time Art Vista Coordinator, Cindy Janssen. Cindy has worked over 20 years at Fammatre School organizing, scheduling and giving lessons to our many parent volunteer Art Docents. Cindy's job went often unseen because she usually worked behind the scenes at night and on weekends getting everything ready for the weekly classroom art lessons. Cindy would make sure all the art supplies were fully stocked, the weekly schedules were updated and the lesson plans printed for each class. Cindy made it all look easy but the amount of time Cindy put in preparing and organizing this amazing and beneficial program took many more hours than we will ever know.

The Art Vista Program would not have survived all these years without all her help and dedication and our students have learned so much from visiting the work of The Masters: Picasso, Rembrandt, Leonardo da Vinci, van Gogh and many more.

Thanks Cindy for all your years of time and dedication to our school and our students! You made a difference at Fammatre and we are grateful you were part of our family for so many years!

District Student of the Month Award: Emma Lin

Every month, one student from each Cambrian School is honored as our District Student of the Month as determined by our grade level teachers. This student represents Fammatre School at a Cambrian School District board meeting.

This month's District Student of the Month Award goes to Emma Lin in Mr. Bovone's Fifth Grade class. Emma is a dedicated student. She comes to class prepared and ready to learn everyday. She excels in her academics and is always willing to help her fellow students. Her dedication doesn’t stop at the classroom, she takes it to the tennis court where she has been playing for several years. Her perseverance in always working to better herself and her work, coupled with her natural intelligence and desire to learn, make her successful at whatever she sets her mind and heart to doing.

Congratulations Emma!!

In order to learn more about student experiences, Cambrian School District is partnering with Kelvin Education to conduct student surveys for students TK-5th grade. Through these surveys, the school will gain valuable information about the social-emotional needs of our students and the climate and culture of our schools. The results of these surveys help inform both school-based and district-wide initiatives to support the social and emotional health of our community. If you would like to opt your child out of participating in the surveys please download and print the form below and return to our school office by October 14.

Social Emotional Well Being Form

Upstander Film Available to View

Dear Cambrian Families,

This year we are pleased to share that we have access to three films created to support our students’ social emotional well being and the challenges they face.

  • The Upstanders The Upstanders teaches about the power of connection and resilience to end bullying behavior, both online and in person.

  • LIKE LIKE explores the addictiveness of social media and the role and impact of technology in our lives.

  • Angst Angst raises awareness and opens up the conversation about anxiety, helping people understand and manage their symptoms and learn when and how to ask for help.

We will be providing either live or virtual access to each of these films during the school year.

The first film we would like to share is The Upstanders. The Upstanders teaches about the power of connection and resilience to end bullying behavior, both online and in person. The Upstanders is recommended for ages 10 and above.

We are pleased to provide home access to our families. Although the film is intended for ages 10 and up, parents of younger students will benefit from watching the film because it will help build awareness of the issue of bullying, and how to support their child to play a positive role. If you would like to view the film, please visit the The Upstanders viewing site at https://bit.ly/3SNUYVY. If you choose to watch the film with your child, here is a Kicking Off the Conversation (Spanish) document designed to provide a parent with questions to explore the content presented in the film.

If you have any problems accessing the film, please contact Matt Hill at hillm@cambriansd.com. If you would like more information about any of the films, please review the links provided above.

Fammatre Giving Campaign 2022-2023

Well done, Falcons! We have raised $10,150 in donations overall - a bit over 10% of our goal! A great start.

We have a truly ambitious fundraising goal this year and we can't get there on parent donations alone. Employer matching programs have accounted for as much as 30-40% of our goal in past years. We cannot stress the importance of asking your employers - big and small - if they can match your donation to our Giving Campaign. If you aren't sure if your employer will match your donation, please send an email to Megan Bright, our Giving Campaign Coordinator, or to any of our HSC Board members and we can help you with this. However, you can also ask your HR department directly if they can match. Many of the big tech/industry employers in the area - looking at you, Apple, Google, Adobe, and Lockheed Martin as just a few examples - DO have matching programs. We don't want to leave any free money on the table because every donation adds up to our goal and allows us to fully fund our programs. Many companies in the area offer donation matching to their employees as part of their benefits packages, so it never hurts to ask. It is a tax write-off for your employer, which is beneficial to them.

So, how do you go about getting the employer match after you've asked and they've said yet? All you need to do is provide them with Cambrian Educational Foundation's tax ID, which is 77-0448212, and most importantly, make sure your employer references FAMMATRE ELEMENTARY when they submit the matching funds so that our school receives 100% of the funds. We sent home a Giving Campaign handout a couple of weeks ago, and inside was an employer matching form to fill out and turn back into the office so we can be sure to look out for what's coming and count those funds in our goal.

Thank you in advance for asking your employers if they can match your $350 donation to the school.

Please donate to Giving Campaign at fammatrehsc.com
