Making Hay

In late August the hot humid air is always suffocating. Folks in Indiana start to get a bit tired of the heat and they have the "heart tug" feel sensing that fall is coming soon; simply a relief and release from the mundane of summer is coming soon. For me on the farm, this was even more complex with the added burden of making (bailing) hay. Hot, dirty, tough and always exhausting it would surely take the best out of you and empty your tank of energy. Even more difficult was bailing Oats Straw. This was even heavier than hay, dirtier and even more consuming. The feel of humid August air always brings back this distant memory. Now, some days I miss that feel of a great day's physical drain. It was a fulfilling sense that not only did I accomplish a great day of work but I also stored up in the barns overflowing resources for days yet to come.

This time of year of school can have a very similar sense. We are in the hay making season, knocking one day off after another. We sense a change is coming both in season and in calendar with spring break just a step around the calendar. But, please connect with me and know that much like making hay above, you as well are storing up something for your kids for another day. They are acquiring new knowledge and new experiences that will pay off tomorrow and each day forward.

Keep making hay!
