Week 26: March 2-6
Around the School...
I thought I would take a minute this week to share some of the great things I see around the building when I am out and about. Some of these things can be captured in a photo, while others are not as easily quantified. For example, I have noticed so many of you provide GREAT wait time when you are questioning your kiddos. This is so important because it allows students time to process and think. Another teaching strategy I have seen some of you do a lot of is providing opportunities to turn and talk. I'm going to talk more about that in the paperless pointer, but it is a great strategy-super simple- that really has the ability to lift student thinking. A few other things I have snapped pictures of are below:

Turn and Talk
What is it? A strategy for providing substantial time for students to think and discuss
What do I need? Your students, a good talking point or question, and a little bit of classroom management
When should I use it? All the time! During read alouds, during class discussions, when waiting in line for the restroom...ALL. THE. TIME.
How do I do it? At different points during a lesson, large group or small group, ask students to "turn and talk" to a partner about a question or topic. This strategy is most powerful when you have planned powerful, higher level questions for students to discuss.
Consider this: For a classroom of 20 students: In a ten minute lesson, if you ask 3 questions and call on 3 students per question, you have provided time for 9 student shares; In that same ten minute lesson, if- instead of asking students to raise their hand-you ask them to turn and talk with a partner, 20 students each get an opportunity to share all three times. Now you have facilitated 60 student shares! That's a lot of processing happening for those kiddos. It also cuts down on side bar conversations during your lesson because you are providing ample time for them to interact and discuss.
A few things to consider:
-Create a structure for this to happen. Students should know who their conversation partner is and they need to be taught how to be an active listener and how to respond appropriately.
-Teach them what to do if their partner is out...form a 'triad' with another pair.
-When teaching them your expectations for this-what do you want it to look like?
-Design your questions and talking points so they compliment the focus of your lesson-think about your "I can" statement.
Clever names for this:
