Davis Elementary School
June 2018 Newsletter
From The Principal
Dear Davis Families,
Where has the time gone? We have come to the end of another incredible, and incredibly busy school year here at Davis. We are so proud to be able to serve the wonderful students, families, and the entire Davis community. Thank you for all you do to make coming to work such a pleasure for all of us who are privileged to work here.
We thank the teachers, staff, and parents for everything you have done this year to make Davis a nurturing, caring, and intellectually challenging school. An expression of gratitude goes to our wonderful home and school, our fantastic homeroom parents, and our volunteers. Thank you for supporting teachers and students in various ways.
The students have worked very hard and we could not be more proud. The end of any school year is filled with a mixture of excitement and sadness. We are very proud of our Inaugural Full Day Kindergarten Class. It has been a pleasure to watch your growth this year. We are also saddened to see our Fifth-Grade students leave. They are the first class to have experienced the “New Davis” from kindergarten. We are also excited for them as they embark on their new adventures at Klinger. We look forward to hearing about their new experiences and successes.
One final note, as many of you know, we are working diligently on class assignments for the 2018-19 academic school year. This process is quite complex and we have many factors to consider. Class assignments will be sent to families in August, as in years past. We are unable to disseminate information prior to that time. I thank you in advance for your patience and understanding.
Below you will find few exciting activities planned for the remainder of the school year.
Our Grade 5 Recognition Program is June 12th at 9:15am-10:45 (Parents are welcomed to attend).
Our Grade 5 Celebration is June 12th at 1:30-3:00pm

A Few Tips from the Nurse’s Office
We are in the home stretch, wrapping up the school year, and everyone is excited for Summer!
Here are a few reminders to help keep your Summer safe and healthy.
Apply sunscreen 30 minutes prior to sun exposure and use generous amounts of UVA- and UVB- blocking sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. Reapply every two hours or more often after swimming or sweating.
Use insect repellents to guard against ticks, which can carry Lyme Disease, and mosquitoes, which can carry the West Nile Virus and other viruses.
Prevent dehydration: Your child should drink water before exercise and during breaks, which should be about every 15 to 20 minutes. On particularly hot and humid days, it's also a good idea for parents to spray down kids with some water from a spray bottle.
Don’t forget Helmets: A helmet is the most important device available that can reduce head injury and death from a bicycle crash, according to Safe Kids USA. Be sure that your child’s helmet fits correctly; make note of adult and child sizes.
Guard against Drowning: Drownings are the leading cause of injury death for young children ages 1 to 4. Always supervise children when in or around water. A responsible adult should constantly watch young children. Children should learn how to swim. Formal swimming lessons can protect young children from drowning. Learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Your CPR skills could save someone’s life. Install a four-sided fence around home pools.
Preparation for next school year
Now is a good time to catch up on odds and ends
that can be more difficult to schedule during the school year. Below are a few reminders on what to check up on over the summer, to ensure that your child has all of their medical needs addressed for the new school year.
Make sure your child is up to date on their immunization schedule.
If you received a nurse form during the school year, requesting an updated physical or dental exam, please have this completed over the summer for the new school year.
Have your child’s doctor complete emergency plans for the new school year, such as an allergy action plan; seizure action plan; asthma action plan.
Double check and note expiration dates on emergency medications for seizures, allergies (Epi-pens) and asthma (Inhalers).
Lastly, I wish you and your family a very happy, healthy, safe and enjoyable summer!!!!!

The Counselor's Corner
We are coming to the end of another great year here at Davis!
The majority of the fifth graders who are moving on to middle school are members of the first class to go all the way from Kindergarten to Fifth grade in our current building. We have watched them grow and develop over the years into the fine people they are today, and are excited to hear about all of the great things they will do in the future.
In our guidance lessons, fifth grade will finish out the year with a presentation on internet safety. Fourth grade will watch a video entitled Bullies are a Pain in the Brain. Our third grade students will see a show called Face Your Fears Without Freaking Out. Second grade will learn to identify stress within themselves and then practice strategies to keep themselves calm. The first grade will learn the conflict resolution strategy of “a bug and a wish” and in Kindergarten the children will practice listening skills.
As you know free time in the summer is so special for all families. We hope you have lots of time to enjoy vacation spots. But even if you prefer a “staycation”, make sure you plan to take trips to the library, a local zoo (Philadelphia, Norristown, Cape May), museums, and other educational destinations. Make sure to encourage your children to complete their summer reading too. These are activities that are low cost and will keep your children engaged and active.

Take A Break, But Bring A Book!
By: Reading Rockets
Reading over the summer not only keeps your child from losing ground, but actually improves skills for the coming year. Here are some suggestions to keep a book in your child's hands over the summer months.
Summer reading tips for parents -
Kids look forward to some time away from homework and quizzes, but summer is not a time to take a break from reading! When students don't read for three months, their academic skills can slip. Three months may not seem like a long time, but by middle school, some experts say this down time can put kids up to two years behind! Reading over the summer not only keeps your child from losing ground, but actually improves skills for the coming year. Here are some suggestions to keep a book in your child's hands over the summer months.
Check with your school - Some schools lend out books over the summer, or may even keep the school library open during certain hours.
Visit your local library- Libraries offer books, audio tapes, videos, and DVDs that can be borrowed for free!
Make fun reading choices - Summer is a great time to explore new authors and illustrators. Check Reading Rockets' Books and Authors section for books by theme. Read the reviews together and have your child choose his or her own books.
Bring along a book - Whenever you leave the house, bring a book with you. Kids can find time to read at the beach, at the park, in the car, on the subway, or waiting in line.
Don't make reading a punishment - Reading should just be a part of your day. Don't have kids miss other summer activities by keeping them inside to read.
Reward reading progress - Add a seashell or a stone to a bucket each time your child reads and shares a book. When you've filled it up, do a fun summer activity like making a nice, cool milkshake together!

Reminder-Absences
While coming to school each and every day is important, it is equally important to monitor our children’s health. If a child is sick, please keep him/her home. Our teachers will work with students who have fallen ill to make sure they do not fall behind in the classroom.
If your child is absent from school, you will be notified via a voice message that will come to the primary phone number listed in Skyward. In addition, an email will be sent to the first email address listed in Skyward. Please be sure that your phone number and email address is updated in Skyward. If an automated call is made, and you believe it to be in error, please call the main office of the school. Automated calls and emails may still occur even if you’ve contacted the school regarding the absence. Absence notes will still be required. You can send a written note in with your child on the day that he or she returns to school. You can also email the excuse note to DAAttendance@centennialsd.org . This email address is dedicated to receiving these notes. If you have any questions regarding this change, please call the main office at (215) 441-6000 x 15010

Teacher's Corner - Run, Read, Rock
Run, Read, and Rock! This school program has been designed to foster the endurance of both literacy and fitness for Davis students. Students have been encouraged to set running goals, embrace the love of reading, and develop a sense of integrity through character building lessons. Participants earned rewards as they reached their goals in these domains. The vision is that the program will serve as a launching pad to help participants soar to their fullest potential as healthy leaders of the 21st Century.
Students were provided with a Reading and Running Journal to evaluate and monitor their progress. The three domains of Reading, Running, and “Rocking Character” supported the broader mission of being a self-determined citizen through perseverance and responsibility. Running and Reading strategies were highlighted each week such as “Using Positive Self-Talk” and “Keeping a Strong Pace.”
A family celebration took place as a culminating event of the program. Families were encouraged to run and read alongside with their child. As part of our “Rocking Character” focus, participants supported friends living with Cystic Fibrosis, and awarded a check to Cystic Fibrosis at the conclusion of our program. Students were full of bright smiles and determination each week at the Run Read and Rock Program! The brain and body connection will set the tone for life-long learning within Centennial School District.
