Happy Spring!
Art is Awesome with Mrs. St. John!
Art is in full swing this spring!
First grade has been mixing colors with everything from crayons to paint to clay. They also painted sunflowers in the style of Van Gogh, and drew dragons for the Chinese New Year! Now we are starting our unit on Texture, so we will be playing with fabric, yarn, sand, glitter, and more!
Second grade practiced mixing colors - and putting them in rainbow order - with color wheel snowflakes. The made bright suns inspired by the ceramic sun faces of Mexico. Students designed their own cities and divided them into night and day with warm and cool colors. Next we will start our Texture unit with some weaving!
Third graders have learned all about color theory: monochromatic colors, complementary colors, warm/cool/neutral colors, and now analogous colors! They also completed a sewing project that turned out amazing! Look for it at the auction!
Fourth grade is learning all kinds of new techniques: blending chalk, painting with cardboard, creating value with soft drawing pencils and blending stumps, and mixing tints and shades. They have created artwork inspired by Raewyn Harris, Andy Warhol, Amedeo Modigliani, Wayne Thiebaud, and Georgia O’Keeffe.
Everyone is working hard on their class art pieces for the auction! We can’t wait to show them off! And now we are celebrating the writing and illustrations of Dr. Seuss with some fun, whimsical art projects!

Reading Rocks in the Kingdom of Books!
LS LIBRARY EVENTS:
- Seuss Week: We had a great week celebrating books and reading together in many ways: TVS Faculty Guest Readers, Ms. Wacky-Tacky, Lucas Miller, Seussical Books Activity, and a special Read-In Day in the library were a few ways we celebrated.
- Lucas Miller, The Singing Zoologist, shared his science-based musical presentations with K-4th grades and we had a great time learning facts and information while jamming out to his unique and fun science songs. Check out his videos on his YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/biorhythms
- Parent Power Hour: Thanks to everyone who was able to come explore the library and share books with your kiddos during our Parent Power Hour. It was a great way to power up the day!
WHAT WE ARE WORKING ON IN LIBRARY CLASSES:
- Kindergarten = Kindergarten is having a great time learning the difference between books that are fiction (make-believe stories) and books that are non-fiction (teach us information) and finding ways to make connections between both sides of the library.
- 1st Grade = The 1st graders are using books from our LUZ section to practice their out-loud reading voices. Encourage your child to share a LUZ book with you and see how fluently they read the story and how well they use punctuation in their voice.
- 2nd Grade = The 2nd graders have been challenged to read as many "Just Right" series as they can from our Chapter Book Challenge Chart and are on-fire discovering great series in all genres that are perfect for their age. Here's the link to our challenge list: https://goo.gl/ZXkemM
- 3rd & 4th Grades = 3rd and 4th graders are working to discover the different chapter book genres in our library, including: Fantasy, Ghost Stories, Science-Fiction, Animal Stories, Adventure/Survival, Realistic Fiction, Classic Stories, Sports Fiction, Mystery, Historical Fiction, Fairy Tales, Mythology, Verse Novels, and Humor.
COMING SOON:
- May 1 = We will welcome Susan Stevens Crummel and Janet Stevens to LS. They are sisters who have written and illustrated many great books together and it is exciting to end the year with a visit from both of them together.
- Summer Reading Challenge = Stay tuned for the reveal of this year's summer reading challenge!

Spanish is Sensacional con Sra. Ross! (K-1)
In First Grade we are working on the body parts by making monstruos, or monsters! We will describe how many of each part the monster has and what colors they are. During Seuss week we will focus on Hay un Molillo en me Bolsillo (There’s a Wocket in my Pocket). The kids will practice rhyming in Spanish by making nonsense words! After Spring Break we will focus on learning the foods and we will even play El Restaurante Rico as we practice eating in a restaurant! As we end the year we will learn months, seasons and celebrations. In this unit we will focus on numbers and weather, too.
As always, look for additions to Seesaw to see what we’re learning. If you have any questions or comments, you can always contact me at rossa@trinityvalleyschool.org

Chinese is Great with Mrs. Zhang! (K-4)
Regarding Chinese culture, all Lower School students will celebrate Chinese New Year!
Beginning on the 15th day of the lunar cycle, we will celebrate the New Year with a "Lantern Festival." We will read books to learn about the Lunar New Year Festivals.
Kindergarten, First and Second grades will make their own red lanterns in honor of the Chinese Lantern Festival and learn about it's many customs and traditions.
