Monday Mission
May 27, 2019:
Student, Staff & Parent Mission: This week, find a person who you know you will be working with next school year, introduce yourself (or reintroduce if you already know them), and tell them how excited you are that you will be working together next year. It could be a teacher in the next grade, or a student in the upcoming grade. It could be a parent who volunteers in the school, or a new staff member or parent in the building.
Student Council 2019 Canned Food Drive
Thanks to the families who donated to the Canned Food Drive this week! Dix Street collected 395 items and more than $241.20 in cash! It is great to see the students working for the good of others!
Pre-Labor Day Start Details
Otsego will start school prior to Labor Day for the 2019-20 school year. Read more on the change and details of the calendar in this article.
Dix Street Summer Step-Up: Succeeding with Reading!
You can help keep our students on track
Each year, Dix Street students go off to Summer break with every intention to read consistently so when they return in the fall they will be ready to learn. Some students return in September having lost many of the skills they learned the previous year. We call this the "Summer Slide." This has a greater impact on our lower-income families, but the reality is that summer slide can affect any child. The "Summer Slide" is an ongoing challenge that schools face every year, and a discouraging development for our most at-risk learners.
The Dix Street family has an idea to keep our youngest learners on top of their reading so they don’t fall behind. At the very least, we want to send each Kindergarten and 1st grade student home with 10-12 books they can read over the summer. If the response to this program is great enough, we will add other grades to the program, making the biggest impact possible for our readers! These books will be the students' to keep and share with friends and siblings.
How can we do that?
With your help, this can be a reality. We have already collected many books to share with students for this program. Thanks for the donations!
You can make a Donation to the Dix Street Summer Step Up: Succeeding with Reading. For $10 you can sponsor one student!
Your sponsorship supports the work of the Dix Street staff as we reach for our goal. Of course, any donation is greatly appreciated and will be used to make sure every K-1 student has books for the summer! Please send me an email at mrollandini@otsegops.org, or contact the Dix Street office to see how you can get involved and make a difference.
SUMMER READING CHALLENGE
Over the next couple weeks, your child will watch the video below and learn all about places to find good books this summer! They'll also learn about the Summer Reading Challenge and receive a Genre Book Board that they should fill out throughout the summer to receive a new book when they get back to school. We want you to have the same information so you can encourage your child to read, read and read some more this summer! They'll also receive a bookmark detailing our Bulldogs Bookin' Bus schedule and Summer Food Program schedule. Thank you for your support in helping your child to read!
M-STEP TESTING IS COMPLETE! Thanks for your support!
