What are the basic skills required for a Commercial Art Director?

Being able to see clearly, Identifying color and seeing differences in color, including shades and brightness, Identifying and understanding the speech of another person, speaking clearly enough to be able to be understood by others.

What types of activities are done on the job?

Prepares typography instructions to prepare materials for typesetting or printing,

Draws custom illustrations,

Reviews material to see if it meets standards,

Works with creative directors to develop design solutions,

Assigns and directs staff to develop design concepts into art layouts and prepares layouts for printing,

Discusses with clients about objectives, budget, background information, presentation, approaches, a and styles,

Shows final layouts to clients for approval,

Discusses with creative, art, copywriting and production staff to discuss client requirements, outline presentation concepts, and coordinate design activities,

Reviews and approves art and copy materials developed by staff,

Creates basic layout designs and determines style and size of type, photographs and graphics.

What are the working conditions and physical demands?

Have to be able to lift 10 lbs. or less of materials,

Have to be able to sit for long periods of time,

Have to be able to be inside more than a third of the time,

Have to be able to make repetitive gestures a third of the time,

Mostly inside, have to be able to use your hands to control objects by picking them up.

What are the work hours and travel?

Irregular work hours and weekend work, no travel.

What are the educational requirements of the job?

Bachelors Degree
