ORHS STUDENTS CELEBRATED BY LOCAL NEWS THIS WEEK! CHECK IT OUT!
SENIOR PARENTS - WORK ETHIC DISTINCTION CERTIFICATES
What is the certificate for?
The Oak Ridge Schools Board of Education has approved the attainment of a Work Ethic Distinction, a distinction that has been available for seniors since 2020. What it entails is students providing a certificate to potential employers that they have been demonstrating desirable work skills.
How do I earn this certificate?
Students are to attain 20 points from the list shown below the image of the certificate here. When they provide evidence of success on these measures, they will be awarded a Work Ethic Distinction Certificate that will serve as part of the student’s job application portfolio.
Logos of employers who have already indicated they are willing to grant preference in interviewing a student who presents a Work Ethic Distinction Certificate are included on the face of the certificate. The list of employers who want to join this effort is growing. An ongoing list of such partner employers will be kept at our local chambers of commerce.
Please have students download the application here and complete the applications for this distinction and return them to Dr. Holly Cross, Supervisor of Career Readiness—ORHS CS244 before April 1, 2022 for recognition at graduation.

SWIMMING FOR CHAMPIONSHIP!
KISL CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW
ORHS Head Swim Coach Chad Hodge sees the future for ORHS Swimming: getting to the top of the podium at the KISL Championships and becoming a team factor at the Tennessee State Swim Meet. While he doesn’t think that’s likely quite yet, the team does look like it can defend its third-place finish from last season at this weekend’s KISL Championship at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center. Hodge tabs Farragut as the favorite and Maryville as a strong runner-up, but he says that “it is going to be a great battle for 3rd between us, Catholic, and Hardin Valley Academy” for third and that even “a top five finish would look like a successful meet” given the quality and depth in the KISL this season.
At the KISL meet, the top 16 places in the high school events score: 20 points goes to the winner, all the way down to 1 point for 16th place. In the relays, 16 places also score, but points are doubled: 40 for the winner and 2 for 16th. In order to secure a top team finish, Hodge is looking for top-end points from several his elite swimmers. A potential All-American, the unbeaten Tais Brown projects as the favorite in the 100 Fly and 200 Free. Brown also swims on the Boys 200 Medley Relay and 400 Free Relay, which are pre-meet favorites. All-arounder Stephen Zhukov is the favorite to take the 500 Free, as well. As for favorites on the girls’ side, Coach Hodge projects Ella Kendall as a winner in the 200 Free and 100 Fly.
Several swimmers could break into the top 3 including Mason Fischer in the 200 IM and 100 Breast, Andrew Chou in the 200 IM and 100 Back, and the girls 200 Medley Relay and 400 Free Relay. Likewise, Zhukov should finish top 5 in the 50 Free , and a bunch of others should finish (and score) between 8th-12, including Amelia Hodge, Sidney Ozcan, Quentin Vanatta, Dylan Hodge, and Colin Suddeth. Sarah Cherry could also finish top 16 and score for the Wildcats. Coach Hodge is also looking for a few surprise swimmers to come out of nowhere and score, as often happens.
Asked whether the team is peaking at the right time, Coach was ambivalent, saying that “we definitely haven’t peaked,” primarily because of issues with COVID and with practice disruptions. Still, he sees a number of surprises on the team who may bring their best efforts at the right time of year: “I could brag on each of them about something but amazingly the surprise swimmers this year have all been boys. Boru Kneiser has swum faster than I thought he would. Quentin Vanatta is someone I can say has steadily improved each week this year, which is very hard to do. I knew Andrew Chou was a very good swimmer, but I didn’t realize how much he would contribute this year as a freshman.”
