Lisa Graff Author Visit - January 16

The Pirate Cove is proud to host an author visit with Lisa Graff. She is the author of 10 middle grade books. Students in 3rd, 4th and 5th grades will have the opportunity to hear her speak after reading some of her books. We have many copies of her books in the library available for check-out and we have 10 of her books on MackinVia. Click the image below to access our e-books. We will also be selling some of her books so that students and parents can attend a book signing after school on Jan. 16. Any student that reads 5 or more of her books and pass the AR test will be invited to a lunch with our author. Visit Lisa Graff's website and stay tuned for more information about this exciting event!

Our Awsome Volunteers - Ms. Lana Kilpatrick

Ms. Lana is our Senior Volunteer of the Year for Palencia Elementary. We call her a "volunteer extraordinaire." Ms. Lana is an extremely dedicated school library volunteer. She has been volunteering for our school book fair since 2013. She helps with all aspects of the book fair including set-up, take down, special events and running the register. In 2017 she became more than a book fair volunteer, she dedicated herself to volunteering weekly and then daily. This year she became a full time volunteer when our library assistant had a family emergency. In the media center, she helps students check out their books by making recommendations and finding just what a student is looking for in a library book. She shelves books and knows the library organization better than anyone else. What is even more amazing about Ms. Lana is that she not only shares her time with our school library, she also volunteers for a local turtle group by waking up early and counting turtle nests. Simply put she is indispensable and we are so lucky to have her volunteering at Palencia!

Birthday Book Club

The Palencia Elementary School Media Center’s Birthday Book Club is a wonderful way to commemorate your child’s birthday. Your participation not only enriches the library collection but allows you and your child to be personally involved in its growth.

To take part in the Birthday Book Club donate one new undamaged hardback book. This book should be a book that your child enjoys and one that we don’t have in the media center already. You can choose a new book at the book store. A quick check of our library catalog (Destiny) will tell you if we already have the book. If you would prefer, you may make a monetary donation of $15 and your child can choose from recently acquired books that are waiting to be put on the shelves. For more information, contact the media center.

How Can I Find an Accelerated Reader Book

There is an App for that. Go to AR Book Finder. Type in the name of a book and find out if the book has an Accelerated Reader test, what the reading level of the book is, and how many points it is worth.
