#lovelikeAndre Day
Andre loved stripes and hats. So let's celebrate like Andre by wearing stripes and hats on Thursday. The only charge for this hat day is ten seconds of dance (a group effort during our morning announcements) and a day of kindness and joy! Let's wear stripes and hats on Thursday and let's #lovelikeAndre!
Recycling Team Art Contest
In conjunction with our first #lovelikeAndre day, the Recycling Team would like your help in designing a new logo! The team is looking for a logo that can be used on recycling bins and other club publications. We want four elements in images or words in any logo design:
- SMS Recycling Team
- joy
- kindness
- #lovelikeAndre
Please doodle and dream and create and submit your designs to the SMS office by Friday, March 13th. They can be on any size or color paper. There are no limitations! Submit as many as you want. Make sure your name is on all entries.
Spring Dodgeball - Get Ready!
We'll be hosting our double elimination dodgeball tourney on Tuesday, March 17th from 3:30-6:00 PM. This spring tourney has a twist! Teams can have six players (all students) or a seventh player that must be an SCSD2 staff member. Six player registration is $30. Seven player registration is $35. All proceeds go to the SMS Athletic Uniform Replacement fund.
Student and family spectators are welcome! Admission is $3 and concessions will be available.
Start gathering players. Start thinking of a team name. And pick up an entry form in the office. Entries and fees are due by Wednesday, March 11th.
Executive Skill: Working Memory
Last week we investigated response inhibition. Hopefully you had a moment or two where you avoided a tirade or a daring mistake because you took a moment to THINK before you went with your gut reaction.
This week's executive skill is working memory*.
Working memory has two parts. First is the ability to hold information in your mind while doing other things. If you were told three words during the morning announcements lanyard, TikTok, and Malaysia. How many of you would remember these three words after you said the Pledge of Allegiance? Chances are you'd remember lanyard because it was first and it is something you all are currently thinking about. Many of you would remember TikTok, especially if you use that social media app. But the third word...what was it? You may have forgotten it already! It was Malaysia, a country in Asia. Unless you have recently studied it or have some connection, it probably went right out of your mind.
To improve your ability to hold info in your head, give it your full attention when you get the info. If the teacher is giving instructions, get out of your iPad and look at the teacher. If there are three steps to an assignment, take a note on paper or annotate the steps a screenshot. If you write yourself a note on paper or on an app, it will help you hold the info. Another way to remember things is to repeat things aloud. If your home adult asks you to do two chores, say them aloud (fold the laundry and empty the trash, fold the laundry and empty the trash.)
The second part of working memory is the ability to connect past learning to current situations. Do you ever think about the past when you make a decision? Should I study my notes for the SS test or should I take a chance and take it without studying? If you skipped studying last month and failed your test, you should think about that experience to guide you to studying this time!
To improve the part of working memory, think about what happened 'last time'. If you got in trouble for not communicating with parents about your after school plans, don't change your plans without communicating with them first!
Think about working memory this week. Pay full attention, take notes, repeat things aloud, use apps or devices to make reminders, and think about your past experiences to help you be less forgetful. You'll love how the benefits of a better memory impact your home and school life!
