Image Searching: What are Creative Commons and Why Students Need to Know

Digital images are everywhere, and students have become accustomed to clicking "search" and simply using any image they find to enhance a project or assignment. However, due to copyright restrictions, not all images are licensable for student use. So how do we help students navigate the vast expanse of media they need to sort through?

Google has now made it easier than ever to search for images licensed as Creative Commons. Creative Commons are a set of various licenses that allow people to share their copyrighted work to be copied, edited, built upon, etc., while retaining the copyright to the original work. According to commonsensemedia.org:

  • Over half a billion CC-licensed works exist free for teachers and students to use.
  • Many of these works are educational resources that have been licensed by teachers, educational organizations, schools, and even the government.
  • Common Sense Media encourages teachers to use the TASL acronym when teaching students how to attribute the work when citing their source.
  • TASL stands for Title, Author, Source, and License.
