2022-2023 School Year Virtual Learning
PWCS believes that students learn best in person; this is critical for both academic and social development. The global COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated that for a limited number of students a full-time virtual school can be a positive option and further enable parent choice. PWCS will continue to support parent interest in this option for the 2022-23 school year on a very limited basis for K-8 students. All students who wish to participate in the full-time PWCS Virtual Academy for the 2022-23 school year will be required to complete an online application by May 10 to be considered for the lottery for spaces in the program.
Enrollment in the full-time virtual program requires a year-long commitment for the entire 2022-23 school year. Students enrolled in virtual learning during the 2021-22 school year must also apply to be considered for the 2022-23 school year. This online application is for those students and their families who wish to participate in a full-time virtual learning program in grades K-8 only, and it must be completed by May 10.
The program will serve three student groups:
- Students with a health condition that is associated with a weakened immune system.
- Siblings of current PWCS students with a health condition that is associated with a weakened immune system and who are applying to PWCS Virtual Academy.
- Any K-8 student who meets the admissions criteria (including grade and attendance requirements) and is selected by lottery.
Visit the PWCS website for more information and to complete the application by May 10.
Priority placement will be given to those students who have specific health conditions which compromise their immune systems and their siblings. All remaining seats will be filled by lottery from those who complete this online application and meet the qualifications.
Student Safety Letter from April 30, 2022
April 30, 2022
Dear Panther Cub Families,
The safety and security of our students and staff is our number one priority. In her letter to the community on Friday, April 29, the PWCS Superintendent, Dr. McDade, shared information concerning the recent drug-related deaths of students in Prince William County. The Prince William County Police has issued an alert that the deaths appear to be connected to counterfeit forms of the drug Percocet laced with fentanyl.
The opioid crisis impacts individuals of varying age, gender, race, and income. It is important that families have awareness of the dangers of these drugs and speak with your children about it.
As part of this education effort, at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 5, PWCS will be hosting a special Family Engagement Series session called “Substance Abuse-Let’s Talk About It.” This virtual event will provide parents and other caring adults with the tools needed to start conversations with their children. You may register for this virtual session and review other helpful resources, including signs of drug and alcohol abuse, at our Substance Abuse Prevention webpage. The session will be recorded and shared on this webpage by Monday, May 9.
If you have concerns about your child, or your family, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) National Helpline is a free, confidential, 24/7, 365-day-a-year treatment referral and information service (in English and Spanish) for individuals and families facing mental and/or substance use disorders. Contact 1-800-662-HELP (4357) for assistance. SAMHSA also has a treatment locator available on their website. In addition, you may also reach out to our school for support, and we will help you find needed resources.
Thank you for your continued support as we work together to keep our students safe and healthy.
Sincerely,
Danna B. Johnson
Principal
