Important Reminders
Planetarium Field Trip
The visit to the planetarium has been rescheduled for next Friday, March 9th. Students will be viewing the solar system show, “Nine Planets and Counting.” This program was designed to meet the NGSS requirement: 3-ESS2-2 - Obtain and combine information to describe climates in different regions of the world (and Solar System). The program is a fascinating tour that explores the variety of objects found in our Solar System. Along the way each planet is examined individually, comparing the rocky worlds to the gas giants. The “Dwarf Planet-Pluto,” and its naming controversy, is also examined.

Reading
5D is continuing to work on their literacy skills with Literature Discussion Groups and RACE strategies. Students have applied their knowledge of thoughtful log elements to create peer evaluations and indicate next steps for growth and expansion of their thinking-writing connections. We have "dug in" to the concepts of main idea and details and the theme of Investigation. Students have also been excited about their six hour club submissions and Reader's Choice vote with the Waukesha Public Library.
In Mrs. Carlson’s class, we are working on developing our reading skills by blogging about our literature discussion books on Padlet. Students are progressing very well in citing evidence and explaining their thinking with personal responses that are thoughtful and in-depth. I am very proud of their work this year and my 5th graders have truly evolved as readers and writers. Please have your kiddos share their Padlets. Also, you can find out how I grade them on their responses with this rubric.
Math Workshop
The fifth graders are working in the Fosnot Unit which focuses on addition and subtraction of fractions and the development of students' understanding of equivalence of fractions, proportional reasoning, and rates. We have begun with an authentic comparison of the cost of cat food at two stores: Bob's Best Buys, where it is on sale at $15 for 12 cans, and Maria's Pet Emporium, where it is on sale at $23 for 20 cans. Several important ideas and representations developed as students explored this problem , one of them being to find the cost of a common number of cans for comparison, and the use of the ratio table to represent students' proportional reasoning about which store has the best buy.
The following shows the Unit Overview.
Social Studies
