Discover U

AUGUST 2017

Hello Discover U Parents/Guardians and Students,

Welcome back! We have had an amazing start to our school year. In this newsletter you will find information on our PBIS plan, parent/student handbook, school hours, sibling care, breakfast/lunch program, new additions around campus, and upcoming events.

Everything we do at Discover U is shaped around our school's mission and vision.

  • Our Mission: To provide a school that works for all students: academically-socially-emotionally.
  • Our Vision: To be the most student-centered school working to nurture, inspire, and empower our learners so that they become strong, successful individuals with 21st century skills. We define 21st century skills as being a critical thinker/problem solver, empowered, collaborative, curious, innovative, and resilient.

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS)

Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports is a proactive approach to establishing the behavioral supports and social culture needed for all students in a school to achieve social, emotional and academic success. Attention is focused on creating and sustaining primary systems of support that improve lifestyle results for all youth by making desired behavior more functional.

This year will be the start of PBIS at Discover U. Our PBIS plan will focus on four key values for all of our explorers: being respectful, proactive, kind, and courageous. We will work together to discuss how these behaviors look and sound around Discover U. Our teachers will be modeling and practicing these behaviors with all students. We hope to continuously focus on positive behaviors to create a school where students feel nurtured, safe, and ready to learn.

Each quarter we will have an all school assembly to celebrate Exceptional Explorers who have demonstrated the behavior to watch that quarter. Students will be voting on a classmate who has continually displayed this behavior. Our Exceptional Explorers assembly will also highlight academic behaviors and perfect attendance.

  • Quarter 1: Respectful
  • Quarter 2: Proactive
  • Quarter 3: Kind
  • Quarter 4: Courageous
