MCAS Bias and Sensitivity Committee information
The MA Department of Elementary and Secondary Education is seeking members for the MCAS Bias and Sensitivity Committee. BSC members help to ensure that MCAS questions do not unintentionally create an unfair test environment by favoring one group of students taking the test over another group of students.
Every year, MCAS tests are administered to all public-school students in grades 3-8 and high school, regardless of backgrounds. At the high school level, students must obtain a passing score on the MCAS English Language Arts (ELA), mathematics, and science tests in order to meet state graduation requirements and earn a diploma. Given the significance of these tests, the Department is seeking a group of diverse educators to serve on the BSC.
Members of this committee use their deep understanding of diverse student populations to assist the Department with the review of all ELA, math, and science MCAS test questions and ELA passages. Committee members review items and passages for potential bias or sensitivity issues to ensure the tests are bias-free and fair for students from all backgrounds. This is an opportunity for educators, especially those attune to racial, cultural, and linguistic diversity, to contribute to the development of the MCAS tests.
The BSC helps to identify potential bias and sensitivity concerns based on age, race, ethnicity, culture, disability, geography, first language spoken, religion, gender, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status. Members review items and passages and make recommendations to the Department. The recommendations are then reviewed and addressed by DESE assessment staff.
The Department is committed to ensuring the committee represents educators who can bring multiple perspectives and represent different backgrounds. We strongly encourage educators of color to apply.
The deadline to apply is January 22, 2020, please see the DESE website.
LHS currently has one active staff member on this committee.
