June's DoTerra Science Tidbit: Co-impact Sourcing
Once the specific plant and the proper environment have been identified, DoTerra goes to work finding the experts who have built their lives around those plants, many of whom have been doing so for generations. DoTerra sources its oils from 40 countries. Of those, more than 20 are developing countries. In these cases, and in many cases even in developed countries, DoTerra's need for essential oils is elevating communities out of poverty and desperate need. This initiative is called Co-impact Sourcing.
Co-Impact Sourcing develops mutually beneficial partnerships. Jobs are created as the need for an essential oil is met. Farming and distilling equipment, as well as training are also provided. Additionally, farmers and distillers enter into agreements that assure them fair and timely pay that they can rely on. One of my favorite examples of Co-Impact Sourcing is that of Vetiver, which is sourced in Haiti. The oil is distilled from the roots only and farmers historically needed to harvest their plants every 4-6 months to receive pay. To distill the oil to its full chemistry, however, and to provide the highest quality of Vetiver oil to consumers, DoTerra researchers knew the plant must grow for 20-24 months. To sustain these farmers financially but still provide the best quality of oil, DoTerra is essentially paying these farmers NOT to harvest their crop! The farmers are compensated regularly for waiting to harvest their crops at the appropriate time for the oil to be sold at the DoTerra CPTG standard. DoTerra's Healing Hands Foundation also steps in to help the rest of the community, providing education, building schools and working to provide the necessities of life such as water systems.
Through the exclusive cooperative agreements between DoTerra, farmers, and distillers, we can improve the daily lives of so many around the world, while providing an abundant supply of the highest quality essential oils to DoTerra users. The video below explains more about Co-Impact Sourcing.
